Swim of the Week: Miami Freshman Duvenhage Crushes 1:45.4 in 200 IM

Disclaimer: Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The Swim of the Week is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

South African freshman Henju Duvenhage crushed three huge wins in his MAC debut, helping Miami win the men’s team title.

Duvenhage kicked off the meet with a 1:45.45 win in the 200 IM. That was a time drop of almost three seconds from his seed coming into the meet, and would have placed him 37th at the NCAA Championships last month.

The freshman also cut nearly ten seconds from seed in his 400 IM, dropping from 3:57.5 to 3:49.6 in prelims and then to 3:48.03 in the final. He broke up a tough duo of Dylan Moffatt and AJ Huskey (also freshmen) from Missouri State, Miami’s biggest rival for the team crown.

And in the 200 fly, Duvenhage dropped from 1:47.80 to 1:44.35, winning the final by just 0.15 seconds.

Duvenhage was also a key relay contributor for Miami, splitting 46.07 on the fly leg of the 400 medley relay, 20.37 on the fly leg of the 200 medley relay, and leading off the 400 free relay in 44.02.
