Edskes Breaks Pool Record For MIT Men In Sweep of NYU And Williams

– The Lead: Powered by three event wins by senior Bouke Edskes (Rockville, Md.), the No. 4 ranked MIT men’s swimming and diving team swept both No. 6 NYU and No. 11 Williams College in a double-dual meet that took place on Friday afternoon in Western Massachusetts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

– Edskes individually won a trio of events which included the 100-fly, 200-fly and 400-IM. The senior captain registered NCAA “B” cut times in both butterfly events and set the Samuelson-Muir Pool record in the 100-fly with his time of 48.60. He clocked a time of 1:50.74 in the 200-fly and a time of 4:02.41 in the 400-IM to round out his day.

– MIT swept the top-three places in three different events this afternoon. Senior Sam Ubellacker (Georgetown, Ky.) paced the Engineers in the 50-free as he clocked a time of 20.72 and was followed by junior Justin Liu (Linwood, N.J.) in 21.03 and senior Emilio Sison (Annandale, Va.) in 21.39. Meanwhile, behind Edskes in the 100-fly was Ubellacker in 50.01 and junior Kevin Fang (Austin, Texas) in 50.41. In addition to his second-place finish in the 50-free, Liu also won the 100-free in 46.07.

– First-year James Richardson (Mercer Island, Wash.) posted first place finishes in both backstroke events as he registered times of 51.58 in the 100-back and 1:53.87 in the 200-back. Behind the first-year in the 100-back was junior Henry Hu (Southbury, Conn.) in second in 51.95 and sophomore Kyri Chen (Naperville, Ill.) in third in 52.01.

– Three other Engineers posted runner-up finishes in the pool this afternoon. Fang claimed second in the 200-free in 1:43.51, sophomore Jordan Ren (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was second in the 400-IM in 4:02.78 and first-year Samuel Song (Johns Creek, Ga.) came in second in the 200-breast in 2:08.00.

– MIT’s “A” 200-free relay comprised of Chen, Liu, sophomore Nicholas Baginski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Ubellacker ended the meet on a high note as they won the event in a time of 1:23.43.

– The “A” 400-medley relay team of Richardson, Ren, Edskes and Ubellacker came in third place to begin the meet in a time of 3:24.65.

UP NEXT:

– MIT will travel to No. 13 Tufts University for a dual meet with its crosstown rivals tomorrow beginning at 1:00 pm. The Jumbos will host the swimming portion of the meet, while the diving will take place inside the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool on the campus of MIT at the same time.
