The 2017 Lewisville Futures Championships opened on Thursday, one of four Futures meets going on around the U.S. this weekend. The opening day featured just the women’s 800, men’s 1500, and the 4×200 free relays.
The women’s 800 saw SwimTulsa’s Liberty Howell, a Missouri state commit, edge Sara McClendon of the Mitchell Aquatic Club by three one-hundredths for the win. Howell used a blistering 1:03.38 final 100m to run down McClendon, who held a lead in excess of four seconds with two lengths to go but couldn’t hang on. Howell clocked in at 8:59.79, with McClendon in at 8:59.82.
The men’s 1500 lacked the same type of drama, as Adam Grimm of the Rex Plex Sharks slowly but surely pulled away to win in a time of 16:08.28, with 2nd going to Matthew Hedman (16:17.95) of Edina.
Alamo Area Aquatics won the women’s 4×200 free relay in 8:35.11, with Lakeside taking silver in 8:36.09. Official splits aren’t yet available for the women’s event.
The Chicago Wolfpack had two massive legs from Reilly Shields (1:52.87) and Jacob Furlong (1:52.01) to get by Springfield YMCA for the men’s event win in 7:45.99. Furlong made up a deficit of nearly four seconds on the anchor leg. Springfield clocked 7:47.43 for 2nd, with their top split coming from Stuart Hohm (1:54.53).
Team scores are not yet available.
