After spending the 2016 season with the interim tag next to her title, Brittany Roth has been named the full-time head coach at the University of North Texas.
“After having watched Brittany coach this season, we are excited to remove the interim tag and name her our full-time head coach of the Mean Green swimming and diving program,” director of athletics Wren Baker said. “We believe Brittany can elevate this program into one that will compete for Conference USA championships, and more importantly, we believe she will help develop the individuals on this team into responsible students and great representatives of the University of North Texas.”
Roth took over the program in July of 2016 when Brendon Bray left to become the head coach at Nevada. Roth spent the 3 prior seasons as an assistant coach at UNT.
In her first season in charge of the program, the women’s-only team finished 4th at the Conference USA Championships, which matched its highest-ever finish. The school broke 5 team records, posted 5 NCAA “B” time standards, and put 6 swimmers on the all-conference team by medalling at the conference championship meet. The team also sent 4 swimmers to the U.S. Winter National Championships for the first time in program history.
The team was 6-4 in its dual meets, which included a win at the Little Rock Invitational and a dual meet victory over regional opponents TCU of the Big 12.
“I am overcome with excitement and joy about this opportunity,” Roth said. “I am grateful for the confidence and support that Wren Baker and his team have shown me throughout the last year. I have enjoyed being part of the Mean Green family the last four years and I’m thrilled to continue my work with these tremendous student-athletes at this incredible university.”
Prior to joining the staff at UNT, Roth spent 3 seasons with Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she helped coach 31 individual league champions. During her tenure, Emily McClellan qualified for the NCAA Championships, making her the first-ever Panther to do so, and scored First Team All-America honors in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. That included a 2nd place finish in the 100.
At just 31 years old, Roth becomes one of the youngest full-time head coaches in NCAA Division I.
