List of 32 Coaches Accused in Sexual Misconduct Trial Released

(This is the list released by the prosecution. For the list released by USA-Swimming of Banned Coaches, not all of which are for sexual misconduct, see here.)

Since we wrote our story a few months ago title “Coaches Gone Wild,” the reports of sexual abuse by swim coaches have exploded. Beyond that, there have been allegations of  USA Swimming working to cover up these allegations, and comparisons have been drawn to the scandal within Catholic church.

Now, there is no more hiding. In addition to major news outlets, like 20/20, pushing for straight answers, and lawsuits being filed, the SCAQ Blog made a request for the names of the coaches named in the wide-reaching scandal and posted it on the internet. The list includes coaches from very highly regarded programs, including the University of Florida and the Bolles school, and a member of the Indiana Swimming Board of Directors. Among the coaches who were found guilty, their crimes range from “sexting” and possession of child pornography to statutory rape, and secretly filming their swimmers undress. At least one coach on the list, Tony Young, was accused of a much lesser crime of failing to report sexual abuse allegedly committed by his swimmers. The misdemeanor charge was eventually dropped, and he resigned.

The full list of coaches named in the Jane Doe vs. USAS lawsuit, which alleges the cover-up by USA-Swimming, along with details of the allegations, can be downloaded as a Word document here. The suit claims that USA-Swimming failed to run adequate background checks on their coaches.

(edit: Note that simple inclusion on this list does not necessarily indicate that a coach committed a sexual abuse. This is simply the list publicly released by lawyers of the plaintiff(s) involved in the case. This is obviously a very sensitive issue, so please take the time to research and consider each case individually before making any judgments.)

Jeffrey VanBuren works at the Legal Services of CNY as an advocacy specialist? How can they hire him after being in prison for being a sexual predator to all those boys? Original Post From Aug. 2002 SYRACUSE (AP) — Authorities say videotapes confiscated from a high school swimming coach’s home show teenage boys watching pornography and masturbating at his house.
Jeffrey Van Buren will be sentenced to 9 years in the NYS Department of Corrections. Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh said the felony charges of child pornography production, promotion and possession, Walsh said.

Jeffrey Van Buren (Liverpool High swim coach, has somehow evaded the NY State sex offender registry and only appears on a local, site. additionally he has promoted himself on YouTube with this bs about helping others reintegrate. How can a sneaky dishonest person scumbag like him be a star of his own crime. it is positively sickening!

He was my social studies teacher in 2001-2002. I was looking to find any reference to his crime online but it looks like he had good lawyers because I can’t find anything where.

Please note as well that Coach Young resigned well after the incident and not as a result of it

Tony Young does not belong on your list. shame on you for posting inaccurate information. Tony was a scapegoat for an incident involving hazing by some students in 1998. All charges against him for “failing to report a crime” were dropped. Why would you feel the need to lump him in with these scumbags. he is a man of utmost integrity who works tirelessly to promote safety and quality in the sport of swimming. Again shame on you for slandering a person of high moral character.

From an Indianapolis Star article:
“In 1998, a member of the Carmel swim team said that on three occasions, other team members had sexually assaulted him with an object in the school locker… Read more »
