Max Gustafson of Shaker Heights, Ohio has verbally committed to West Virginia University for 2017-18. Gustafson swims for Shaker Heights High School as well as the club team Shaker Sharks, but he has yet to swim year-round. He plans to train through the summer of 2017 in preparation for his collegiate career.

At the 2016 Ohio State High School Division I Championships last February, Gustafson won the consolation final of the 500 free with 4:35.87, after having taken the 16th qualifying spot in prelims. He also competed in the 200 free, placing 20th, and led off Shaker Heights’ 200 medley (24.76) and 200 free (21.77) relays in prelims. In addition, Gustafson holds the school record in the 100 fly.
Gustafson represented the Shaker Sharks at both the 2016 Lake Erie Senior Championships and the 2016 NCSA Spring Swimming Championships last March, competing in a litany of free, back, fly and IM events. A USA Swimming Futures qualifier, Gustafson’s best SCY times are:
- 100 fly – 50.71
- 100 free – 47.17
- 200 free – 1:42.48
- 500 free – 4:35.87
- 1650 free – 16:06.56
Gustafson will join the Mountaineers with fellow class of 2021 commit, Canadian Philip Kay.
