Last Time Out
For 12 of the swimmers on the Ohio State women’s side, this will be the second competition of the season. The Buckeyes traveled to Florida Gulf Coast University on Oct. 7-8 to take part in the FGCU Classic, taking second place.
Individually, Ohio State earned several first place finishes. Highlights included: Zulal Zeren, Molly Washko, Liz Li, and Macie McNichols won the first Buckeye race of the season with the meet-opening 200 medley relay; Meg Bailey posting the first NCAA B time of the season, winning the 400 IM with a mark of 4:17.01; Li winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.74 (B); McNichols, Maria Coy, Chantel Wynn, and Li helping the Buckeyes earn a sweep of the relays on the first day with a win in the 400 freestyle relay; Bailey and Li winning the 100 IM and 100 freestyle, respectively, on day two; and McNichols, Coy, Wynn, and Li closing out the meet with a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.
Big Expectations
Three swimmers were named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSwimming.com: Matt McHugh (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly), Liz Li (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly), and Lindsey Clary (1650 freestyle, 400 IM).
The three Ohio State stalwarts had incredible success in those events last year; Clary, Li, and McHugh won Big Ten titles in each of these events last season and they were All-Americans in five of them.
Buckeye Bits
- On the men’s side, Ohio State returns six swimmers who participated in NCAA Championships last season as well as four divers. Leading the way is NCAA Champion Colin Zeng, the first diving national champion for OSU since 2008. Matt McHugh, a Big Ten Champion and All-American, leads a group of swimmers into this 2016-17 season.
- Other NCAA swimming returners include Ching Lim, Brayden Seal, Andrew Appleby, Mossimo Chavez, and Kevin Musterait. Stephen Romanik, Aaron Daniels-Freeman, and Clay White join Zeng as NCAA returners for this season.
- For the women, it’ll be Lindsey Clary and Liz Li leading the charge along with Haley Allen, Taylor Vargo, and Macie McNichols. All five earned NCAA Championships berths last season.
- Last season, Clary was an All-American in three different events (400 IM, 500 and 1650 freestyle) and a Big Ten Champion in the 400 IM and 1650 free. Li won two individual titles as well (50 free and 100 butterfly).
- Both sides accomplished fantastic feats in the postseason last year: for the women it was the most B1G Championships in a single season since 1991, and the men extended their streak of Top 5 finishes at the conference championship meet to 11.
- Over the summer, 34 Buckeye swimmers represented Ohio State at 2016 Olympic Trials, one of the biggest contingents of any organization at the meet.
