Social Media Olympics: Internet Explodes After Phelps Wins 19th Gold

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

Sunday night was a crazy night in the pool, and it’s safe to say it may have been the most swimming has ever been talked about over the internet in history. Headlining last night’s action were Michael Phelps, who won his record 19th career Olympic gold medal, and Katie Ledecky, who smashed the world record in the women’s 400 free.

live social media hub has been created on mention.com, tracking all social posts from over 1 billion sources including social media, forums, news, blogs, etc…

Many interesting pieces of data can be discovered from this, most notably of all who the most talked about countries and athletes are during these 2016 Rio Games.

Not surprisingly, Phelps is the most talked about athlete over the last 24 hours and overall throughout the games, with nearly 250,000 mentions in the last 24 hours and over 409,000 in total.

Ledecky is the third most talked about athlete over the last 24 hours with over 151,000 mentions, and is 5th in total mentions with over 192,000. With nearly 80% of her mentions coming over the last day, look for Ledecky’s stock to continue to rise as she has three more events on her schedule.

Phelps will no doubt continue to gain ground too, still with three individual events on his schedule along with one, potentially two, relays.

The other Olympic athletes in the top five are tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, and gymnastics star Simone Biles.

In terms of countries, the U.S. are the overwhelming leaders over the last 24 hours after their big night in the pool with over 138,000, while Brazil is up by nearly 100,000 overall with 866,000 to date.

In terms of sponsors, Coca-Cola are the leaders by far with over 70,000 mentions.
