Nicholas Schwegel Commits to Virginia Tech in Spring Period

Nicholas SchwegelNicholas Schwegel of Southeastern Virginia Aquatics and Isle of Wight Academy has committed to swim collegiately at Virginia Tech.

Schwegel is primarily a middle-distance freestyler and IM’er, and he will join an IM group next fall that includes both the defending ACC Champion in the 200 IM (Brandon Fiala) and 400 IM (Robert Owen). Fiala and Owen are both entering their senior seasons.

Schwegel’s best times in yards:

  • 200 yard free – 1:40.32
  • 500 yard free– 4:31.64
  • 200 yard fly – 1:50.20
  • 100 yard fly – 51.45
  • 200 yard IM – 1:52.47
  • 400 yard IM – 3:57.08

Schwegel has dropped time almost across-the-board in yards during his senior season, but it was in long course meters that he really made big moves in 2015. In the 400 IM, for example, he swam the 7-fastest times of his career in meters, and improved from a 4:49 to a 4:35. In the 400 meter free, he went from a 4:11 at the beginning of his junior year to a 4:05 as a senior. He dropped 10 seconds in the 200 fly across that same time period.

“Swimming for Virginia Tech has been a lifelong dream of mine, and it’s surreal to believe that this is finally happening,” Schwengel said. “I can’t wait to be representing Hokie Nation in the pool and in the classroom, and I really look forward to racing at the collegiate level. I can’t thank my friends, family, and support system enough for getting me this far.”
