Pitt Senior Swimmer Lauren Mills Awarded Fulbright Scholarship

  1 Braden Keith | April 13th, 2015

PITTSBURGHLauren Mills, a senior swimmer on the Pitt swimming and diving team, was recently awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and will allow her to travel to Madrid to attend the Instituto de Empresa, also known as the IE Business School, to earn her master’s degree in International Management.

Her specific Fulbright Scholarship is only offered to one student in the United States.

Mills was a co-captain on the women’s swimming and diving squad, specializing in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. As well as a leader in the pool, she was also a leader in the classroom. Mills was a part of the student-athlete 4.0 club three times, as well earning the women’s swimming top academic award three years in a row.

Along with her stellar performances in the pool and classroom, Lauren has actively been involved in community service and mission trips in her four years at Pitt. She went to Haiti with Panther Fellowship for a mission trip, as well as Vietnam for Coach for College. She has been involved in the Special Olympics swim meets and other community service events all four years at Pitt.

In addition to winning the Fulbright Scholarship, Mills was granted the Tafel Fellowship in 2013 and an Honors College Scholarship.

“I’m extraordinarily excited to be going to Spain,” Mills said of her postgraduate studies. “I love traveling the world and seeing God in new places. I’ll be stepping out of my comfort zones and I’m looking forward to it.”

After she finishes up with her master’s, Mills will be looking for opportunities to get involved with companies’ community engagement.

“I believe that companies have vast potential to influence the people around them beyond just the products and services they provide,” Mills said. “Tapping into and directing that potential is my life dream.”
