Van Mathias on Improvements: “Some of the best athletes ever have a bad memory”

Van Mathias has been on a roll this week in Indianapolis. Night 1, he re-broke his own 50 Breast American record. Night 3, he won the 50 free in 21.6. And now, in prelims of Day 4, he’s gone 58.3, just .2 away from his PB and the American record. Mathias says his mindset this past year has been to keep moving forward, noting that “some of the best athletes ever have a bad memory”.

Good mindset. As awesome as this breakout is for him, it also must be so stressful to now have all these expectations and hopes become suddenly realistic.
