  4. Mikel Schreuders (MA Swim Academy) – 27.51

  8. Jake Wang (Bulldog Swimming) – 27.80

The year of Mathias continues, and this chapter is back in Indiana, as Van Mathias continues to down records and fire off stellar swims. During the first session of the Pro Series stop in Indianapolis, Mathias cracked his own Pro Swim Series record in the 50 breast in 26.53, a four-hundredth improvement on his own record that he set in January in 26.57.

That time puts him just over two tenths of a second ahead of current US Open Record holder Michael Andrew in 26.75; those two were the only swimmers in the prelims to swim under 27 seconds.

Andrew’s US Open Record of 26.52 is among the lone domestic 50 breast records that Mathias has yet to claim, as he downed Nic Fink‘s American Record in the event back in April at the Bergen Swim festival when he swam his 26.39, a time that still stands as the fastest performance in the world this season.

He still sits a good bit off Adam Peaty‘s World Record time of 25.95, though Mathias is ranked as the 9th-fastest performer ever in the event.

Mathias’ 50 breast from this morning, had he not already owned the fastest time in the world this season, would have been the 2nd-fastest performance of the season, only trailing Italian breaststroker Simone Cerasuolo at 26.51.
