Hampton Virginia Current Hires Arilson Champman As Associate Head Coach

Hampton Virginia Current (HVA Current) has hired Arilson Champam as an associate head coach, the club announced on Tuesday. Champam joins the club after most recently spending time in India.

Champam said, “Throughout my career I have been fortunate to work with athletes at every level of the sport. What attracted me to HVA Current was the vision, the culture, and the opportunity to help build something meaningful for the long term. I believe this program has tremendous potential, and I am excited to work alongside Coach Kanak, our athletes, and our families as we continue raising the standard of excellence.”

Champam arrives after most recently spending time as Head Swimming Coach for the Inspire Institute of Sport in India. Prior to his time there, he served as National Swimming Coach for the Korea Sport & Olympic Committee and Korea Swimming Federation.

He returns to coaching in the US as he also has six years of experience as Head Swimming Coach and Aquatics Director at Montverde Academy in Florida.

HVA Current was established in 2023 and was the first club in the Hampton area. The team sent one girl and one boy to St. Mary’s City Sectionals back in March.

The team’s head coach is Lisa Kanak. Kanak spoke of the hire, “Arilson brings a rare combination of international experience, program-building expertise, and genuine passion for developing young athletes. His background speaks for itself, but what impressed me most was his excitement about helping build the future of HVA Current. He understands that sustainable success comes from strong fundamentals, technical excellence, and a commitment to developing the whole athlete.”
