Less than a week after first breaking the Mare Nostrum record in the women’s 400 free, New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather lowered the championship record even further on night one in Barcelona.
Fairweather threw down a winning time of 4:01.75, shaving .05 off of the record time that she set last weekend in Monaco (4:01.80).
Prior to her breaking the record in Monaco, the Mare Nostrum record stood at 4:02.84 for 13 years, set by Camille Muffat of France back in 2013.
Fairweather led the race right from the start tonight, taking her swim out in 57.37 on the opening 100, which was nearly half a second faster than her opening split of 57.76 in Monaco. She continued to dominate the field for the remaining 300 meters, charging into the wall over a second ahead of runner-up Agostina Hein (4:02.99).
Fairweather’s victory was just .33 off of the season-best time of 4:01.42 that she posted in early May, which ranks her 5th in the world so far this season. She holds a lifetime best time of 3:59.44 from the 2024 World Championships but has not broken the 4:00 mark since then.

Pallister/Fairweather 400 will be great at Comm Games.
