Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s and Women’s Swim & Dive Coach is responsible for leading, managing, and developing both the men’s and women’s programs. This role oversees all aspects of both teams, including coaching, training, recruitment, strategic planning, and athlete development, with a focus on achieving academic success and competitive excellence. The Head Coach is expected to maintain high-performance standards for both programs, foster a culture of integrity, leadership, and accountability, and create a positive, disciplined, and highly competitive team environment.
TEAM LEADERSHIP and MANAGEMENT
- Lead, inspire, and mentor student-athletes for two separate (men’s and women’s) programs, fostering a competitive, disciplined, and positive team environment.
- Develop and implement strategies that promote competitive excellence, team cohesion, and individual growth and development.
- Set and maintain high performance standards that emphasize competitiveness, preparation, and accountability in and out of the pool.
- Enforce team rules, promote a culture of accountability, and provide guidance on both athletic and personal matters.
RECRUITMENT
- Lead recruitment for both the men’s and women’s programs, identifying, evaluating, and enrolling 8–10 student-athletes per team annually to maintain sustainable and competitive rosters.
- Develop and execute a strategic recruiting plan that prioritizes athletes capable of contributing to the competitive success of both programs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with high school coaches, club programs, and other recruiting contacts to expand the program’s reach and talent pipeline.
- Monitor and evaluate recruits’ performance and potential, ensuring incoming athletes strengthen team competitiveness and program sustainability.
- Ensure all recruitment activities comply with NCAA, conference, and institutional regulations, while advancing the program’s competitive goals.
COACHING and COMPETETIVE STRATEGY
- Oversee all practice planning, training, and competition strategies for both programs, ensuring preparation aligns with program goals and competitive standards.
- Develop and execute practice plans, training programs, and meet strategies to make real-time tactical decisions that enhance competitiveness in swim and dive events.
- Provide individualized coaching that emphasizes technique, mental preparedness, and performance under pressure.
- Set and enforce performance expectations for athletes and staff, maintaining accountability, high standards, and a culture of competitiveness across both programs.
STAFF and ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP
- Hire, supervise, and mentor assistant coaches and support staff, promoting professional development and a shared commitment to competitive excellence.
- Foster a collaborative, motivated coaching staff that models high performance standards and contributes to the overall success and reputation of both programs.
- Ensure effective communication and operational coordination within the coaching staff and athletic department to support a highly competitive and well-organized program.
- Manage administrative responsibilities related to both programs, including scheduling, travel logistics, budgeting, and compliance with institutional, conference, and departmental policies.
COMPETITION AND POOL OPERATIONS
- Oversee all aspects of meet preparation and execution, ensuring the team is physically ready, mentally focused, and competitively prepared; representing both programs with professionalism and integrity at all home and away competitions.
- Coordinate the aquatics facility schedule, including team practices, classes, open swim for students/faculty/staff, Student Affairs events, and NCAA/SCIAC championship events, while navigating shared use of the pool with Bonita High School and with the City of La Verne.
- Hire, schedule, and supervise qualified lifeguards for home aquatics contests and events.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs of equipment and inform the correct designees from ULV, Bonita High School, and the City of La Verne of ongoing repair or improvement needs, including capital needs.
- Coordinate or assist with pool setup, equipment, and other event logistics as needed to ensure smooth operations.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT and OVERSIGHT
- Manage and oversee both program’s annual budget, ensuring financial resources are strategically allocated to support competitive success across coaching, facilities, equipment, recruitment, and travel.
- Collaborate with the athletic department’s administrative team to ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines and institutional/departmental financial policies.
- Monitor expenditures to maintain fiscal responsibility while maximizing the program’s operational and competitive efficiency.
- Identify and pursue external funding opportunities, including donations, sponsorships, and fundraising initiatives, to enhance the program’s financial sustainability and competitive resources.
COMPLIANCE and INSTITUTIONAL ALIGNMENT
- Ensure full compliance with all NCAA, SCIAC, and University regulations, policies, and ethical standards governing intercollegiate athletics.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of recruitment guidelines, eligibility requirements, and other regulations relevant to the program.
- Work collaboratively with athletic administration to align both program’s goals, operations, and culture with the broader mission and values of the University.
- Uphold the highest standards of competitive integrity, academic responsibility, and professional conduct, promptly reporting any potential concerns or violations to the Director of Athletics, Deputy Director, or Compliance & Student Services Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or a designee assigned by the Director of Athletics.
ACADEMIC OVERSIGHT
- Support student-athletes in meeting academic responsibilities and maintaining eligibility through regular communication with academic advisors.
- Encourage accountability and discipline in the classroom as part of a competitive and balanced student-athlete experience.
- Reinforce the importance of academic progress as a foundation for overall success in the program.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT and MEDIA RELATIONS
- Serve as the primary ambassador for the program, representing both teams at public events, media interviews, and community outreach programs.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with alumni, donors, sponsors, and local community partners to enhance the visibility and support of the program.
- Promote the Swim & Dive program through strategic communication and media initiatives that highlight both team’s competitive success, culture, and student-athlete achievements.
