2x Minnesota AA State Champ Kelli McCarthy Gives Verbal to Golden Gophers

With her verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota for 2018-19, Edina, Minnesota’s Kelli McCarthy has opted to remain in state for her collegiate career. McCarthy swims for Edina High School and Edina Swim Club. She won the 500 free at the MSHSL Girls AA Swim & Dive Championships in both her sophomore and junior seasons. As a sophomore in the fall of 2015, she won the state title in the 500 free with 4:56.91. She was runner-up in the 200 free (1:50.94) and contributed a 51.0 leg to the state-champion 400 free relay. The following year she won the 500 in 4:52.03, placed second in the 200 free (1:48.49), and was on both Edina state-champion freestyle relays, both of which broke the Class AA and the all-time Minnesota state records.

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, McCarthy finished in the top 8 in the 100/200/500/1000 free and 400 IM at the Iowa City Sectionals in March. Most recently she was an A finalist in the 100m free (8th) and 200m free (5th), and a C finalist in the 400 IM (21st), 400 free (20th) and 1000 free (22nd) at the 2017 NCSA Summer Championships.
