2026 SPEEDO CANADIAN OPEN

Another busy night of racing awaits us on night 2 at the 2026 Speedo Canadian Open, with 20 individual champions and two relays to be crowned. Taylor Ruck (50 back), Ole Eidam (50 fly), and Oliver Dawson (200 breast) all set meet records this morning, Ruck doing so for the second morning in a row.

Tonight’s races will include the para 400 freestyle (S6-S13), the 50 backstroke, para 150 IM (S1-S4), 100 freestyle, para 100 butterfly (S8-S14), 200 breaststroke, para 50 breaststroke (S1-S3), 50 fly, para 100 backstroke (S1, S2, S6-S14), 800 freestyle, and the 4×100 freestyle relay.

Women’s Para 400 Freestyle S6-S13

Alyssa Smyth and Mary Jibb, the top two swimmers from the 100 free yesterday, made this race a two-horse race as they streaked away from the field on the first 100 meters. They were separated by 1.25 seconds at halfway, with S13 swimmer Smyth leading S10 swimmer Jibb.

Smyth extended that gap over the next two lengths, turning in 3.35.45 at the 300 meter mark to lead by almost three seconds. That turned into a seven second gap at the touch, with Smyth closing in 1:11.05 to Jibb’s 1:15.93.

Smyth took the win with 940 PARA points, followed by Jibb (916) and S6 swimmer Shelby Newkirk (851), who lowered her Canadian Para Record in the event by nearly four seconds as she dipped under 6:00 for the first time in 5:58.36.

Men’s Para 400 Freestyle S6-S13

The men’s race saw a trio out in front rather than a duo, with Reid Maxwell, Ken Stroud and John Gillis turning within 1.19 seconds at the 100. Maxwell pulled away to lead at halfway by three seconds, with Stroud pulling out to a similar lead over Gillis.

Maxwell nearly negative split the race, swimming the second half in 2:16.32 after a 2:16.15 opening 200, and grew his lead over Stroud in second to 15 seconds as he touched in 4:32.47, 8.57 seconds off his Canadian Record form the Paris Paralympics. Stroud touched second with Gillis in third, placing the same in terms of PARA points.

Leo Zheng and Antoine St-Germain were separated by nearly 50 seconds, but tied for PARA points in 4th.

Ingrid Wilm led from the off to take the win in 28.21, the only swimmer to break 29 seconds in this final. She was off her meet record of 27.75 from 2024 and the 28.18 she swam to take the win last year.

Taking silver in 29.02 was Bridget Burton, who dropped half a second from the 29.50 she swam this morning, with Lucy Wiens claiming bronze in 29.23.

*Halayna Montrichard was granted a reswim due to an issue with her backstroke ledge, and swam 29.34 to place 4th overall.

Javier Acevedo defended his top seed by a whisker, leading four swimmers who swam neck-and-neck for pretty much the whole race. The Canadian Record stretched to take the win in 25.84, beating out Israeli Inbar Danziger’s 25.85. Danziger won the 100 back last night, which Acevedo did not enter.

Parker Deshayes was half a second off his best time to place 3rd in 25.90, just 0.06 seconds behind Acevedo, with last night’s 100 back runner-up Raben Dommann 4th in 26.05.

Women’s Para 150 IM S2-S4

Jordan Tucker pulled away on the breaststroke leg, outsplitting Aly Van Wyck-Smart by ten seconds, and took the win in 3:49.37 to fall just over half a second off her seed time. Van Wyck-Smart touched for silver in 4:21.27, just 27 PARA points behind

Taylor Ruck was out fastest, starting to pull away after 25 meters and hitting the halfway point in 25.74, nearly a second ahead of Bella Sims’ 26.62. She only extended that lead down the stretch, closing in 28.06 to touch in a brand new meet record of 53.80. That slices a tenth off the former mark of 53.90, set in 2024 by Summer McIntosh.

That places her 12th in the world this season, moving up one spot after dropping 0.08 seconds from the 53.88 she swam at the Westmont Pro Swim Series last month.

Bella Sims edged out Ella Jansen for silver, holding off the Tennessee swimmer by 0.16 seconds, 55.18 to 55.34. Sims was slightly aster on both legs, by 0.09 seconds on the first 50 and 0.07 seconds on the second 50.

Leah Tigert took 4th in 56.06, just off the 56.03 she swam this morning, with former Tennessee swimmer Brooklyn Douthwright 5th in 56.20.

Blake Tierney set the early pace out of lane 8, but it was Laon Kim who flipped first at the 50 in 23.70, ahead of Daniel Krichevsky (23.84) and Antoine Sauve (23.91).

Tierney fell back on the second half of the race, as 200 free champion Antoine Sauve reeled in Kim in the closing meters to touch in 49.26 and take the win. Daniel Krichevsky, the fastest seed from this morning in 48.94, was 0.45 seconds slower tonight in 49.39 to take 2nd, with Ole Eidam moving from 5th at halfway to 3rd at the 100 as he touched in 49.62.

Kim fell to 4th in 49.94, as he closed in 26.24. Yuri Kisil(50.15) and Finlay Knox (50.31) were just behind.

Alyssa Smyth took her second win of the evening, roaring back on the second half of this race to make up a deficit of over a second to Tianna Asala at halfway. Smyth split 32.74/36.73, touching nearly three seconds ahead of the field to take the win by 8 PARA points.

Asala and Marianna Leroux were separated by just one PARA point and 0.04 seconds, as the top three swimmers were covered by just 9 PARA points.

Men’s Para 100 Butterfly S8-S14

Nicholas Bennet led by just 0.06 seconds at halfway, touching in 28.07 to Jagdev GIll’s 28.13, but closed more than three seconds faster to finish as the only swimmer under 1:00 in 58.99.

However, it was Hunter Helberg who took the win on PARA points, finishing with 927 to Bennett’s 917. Gill placed 3rd in 1:02.14 with 867 PARA points.

Sophie Angus led from the 100 meter mark onwards, splitting 1:12.78/1:20.19 as she took the win in 2:32.97. There was a close battle for silver behind her as Marley Monsen ran down Kamila Blanchard from nearly two seconds back, closing in 39.05 to Blanchard’s 41.06 to take silver in 2:34.11.

Angus won her first gold of the meet, having placed 2nd in the 50 breast yesterday. Alexanne Lepage, the gold medalist in that event, was not in the field tonight.

Oliver Dawson was out half a second faster than this morning at the halfway point, 1:02.30 to 1:02.88, ahead of his PB pace from last summer. He was 33.72 on the third 50 to touch in 1:36.02, and blasted a 33.50 on the final 50 to hack eight tenths off his personal best and touch in 2:09.52.

That time falls just 0.68 seconds off a Canadian Record that is older than Dawson, and moves him up to 2nd in the all-time Canadian rankings, leapfrogging James Dergousoff. Dawson also demolishes his meet record of 2:12.82 from this morning.

He also moves up to 10th in the world this year, overtaking Leon Marchand.

Apollo Hess took silver in 2:16.97, three-quarters of a second ahead of Tanner Cole in third. Bejamin Cescon nearly stole the bronze, closing half a second faster than Cole but falling just 0.15 seconds short.

Taylor Ruck got off to the best start out of lane 4, but was challenged by backstroke specialist Ingrid Wilm, who won the 50 backstroke earlier in the session.

Wilm stayed in touch until the final few meters, when she fell back into the pack, as Ruck surged to the wall to touch in a new meet record of 26.12. Matea Gigovic took silver in 26.91, with Ellan Jansen outtouching Wilm by a tenth for bronze.

Ruck’s swim marked her second meet record of the day, having swum 26.29 this morning. She has two meet records tonight, and five from six swims so far this week.

Ole Eidam led from the off out of lane 4, pulling away from the field to slice a quarter of a second off his meet record of 23.66 from this morning. He was nearly seven tenths of a second clear of former meet record holder Eric Ginzburg in second, as touched in 24.09, ahead of Finlay Knox in 24.15.

Reid Maxwell claimed his second gold of the evening, touching 3rd but taking the win by 33 PARA points over 100 fly gold medalist Hunter Helberg. Ken Stroud made it back onto the podium after placing 2nd behind Maxwell in the 400 free, with Cameron Chambers just 0.22 seconds but 60 PARA points behind in 4th.

Abigail McLeod was out fastest to 200 meters tonight, flipping in 2:10.84, but at the halfway point she had been overtaken by Elleigh Wise. Both swimmers were more than three seconds off the pace set by Delphine Piatera-Mercier in the early heats this morning, but began to outsplit her over the second half.

With 200 meters to go Wise was just a second off the page, with McLeod a further two seconds back, but Piatera-Mercier’s pace was too strong, as Wise touched just udner a second slower, 8:59.25 to Piatera-Mercier’s 8:58.27.

McLeod held on for bronze, withstanding a rapid 2:11.62 final 200 from Hannah Rutten – faster than her opening split of 2:13.74.

Men’s 800 Freestyle

Alexandre Lepine was out fastest, the only swimmer in the field under 2:00 on the first 200 meters, but at the halfway point it was Aiden Kirk in the lead, flipping in 4:05.85 to Lepine’s 4:06.17.

Kirk then kept every 50 on the second half of the race under 31 seconds, negative splitting the race as he swam 4:05.01 on the back half. He took the win by nearly six seconds over Oliver Blanchard, while Lepine fell back to 5th with a 4:14.87 second 400.

Women’s 4×100 Freestyle Relay

Team Canada had too much for the rest of the field tonight, getting all four splits under 56 seconds and the only sub-55 split in the field from Taylor Ruck.

Ella Jansen put them out to an early lead with a 55.27 leadoff, 0.07 faster than she was in the individual 100 free, although Marlee Winser was not too far behind with a 55.72 for Team British Columbia. Taylor Ruck pulled away on the second leg with a 54.83 split, more than a second faster than the next fastest swimmer, Ontario’s Leah Tigert in 56.01.

Ingrid Wilm (55.76) and Brooklyn Douthwright (55.21) were the two fastest legs on the third and fourth legs to bring Team Canada home in 3:41.07, nearly five seconds ahead of British Columbia in 2nd.

Men’s 4×100 Freestyle Relay

Top Three:

  1. Team Canada – 3:20.69
  2. Team Ontario – 3:29.11
  3. Team Quebec – 3:29.38

Team Canada roared to a dominant victory in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay, getting the fastest four splits in the field. Antoine Sauve led them off in 49.89, before Javier Acevedo (50.12), Finlay Knox (50.36) and Yuri Kisil (50.32) led the procession home.

Team Ontario held off Team Quebec for silver thanks to a 51.67 split on the third leg from Gabriel Ardeleanu. Eitan Issakov had the fastest split outside of Team Canada, splitting 51.48 on the second leg for Quebec.
