2025 World University Games: Day 5 Prelims Preview

2025 World University Games

Day 5 prelims at the World University Games will see the men’s 100 fly, women’s 200 free, men’s 50 breast, women’s 50 back and women’s 200 IM, as well as the mixed 4×100 free relay to round off the session. Several swimmers will be back in action this morning, including three-quarters of Team USA’s record-setting women’s 4×200 free relay from last night.

Tennessee’s Kamal Muhammed is the top seed in the 100 fly in 51.89, one of two swimmers entered under 52 seconds. Matt Kline will be next to him in the final heat, with Ruard van Renen in lane 1 giving that heat a strong NCAA flavor. Wang kuan-hung returns as the 6th seed after placing 2nd in the 200 fly last night.

Ole Eidam is a bit of a dark horse in this event, only seeded 14th in 52.78 but having dropped splits of 51.35 and 51.45 on the mixed medley relay. Along with #2 seed Bjoern Kammann, he could give Germany quite the 1-2 punch.

Despite finishing 2nd in the women’s 4×200 free relay last night, China has the top two seeds in this morning’s individual event. Isabel Ivey and Caven Gorman will represent the U.S., with six swimmers here entered under 1:58. Ivey had the only sub-1:58 split with her 1:57.23 on that relay, and has looked in excellent form so far in Berlin.

Top seed Michael Houlie has scratched the 50 breaststroke, after not starting the 100 breaststroke on Day 1. That leaves Reo Okura of Japan as the fastest remaining swimmer ahead of Malaysia’s Andrew Zheng Yen Goh. Nate Germonprez is the fifth seed in 27.53, with 100 breast bronze medalist and 200 breast champion Ben Delmar in the non-circle seeded heats with an entry time of 28.41. He was out in 28.17 on the 100, so look for him to move up into a top-16 position.

Dawid Wiekiera will also look to add a third medal in breaststroke, having taken silver (100) and bronze (200) so far. He is the sixth seed, entered with a time of 27.59 and will be in the same heat as Hong Kong Record setters Adam Mak (27.89) and Nicholas Cheung (28.00).

Leah Hayes is the top seed in the 200 IM, and will be confident of holding onto that position after setting a new best in the 200 free yesterday. Her teammate Teagen O’Dell, who took second behind Hayes in the 400 IM earlier in the meet, is the third seed with Canadian Ashley MacMillan between the two. Ge Chhutong will take on a tough double as she will be swimming this event and the 200 free this morning.

Anna Pirovano, Lisa Nystrand and Kim Herkle return after competing in the 200 breaststroke semi-finals yesterday, with Pirovano and Nystrand having already made one IM final this meet after qualifying for the 400 IM final on Day 2

Leah Shackley‘s entry time in the 50 backstroke is a full four-tenths of a second below Adela Piskorska‘s Universiade Record from 2023, and she will want to avenge her defeat to teammate Kennedy Nobel in last night’s 100 backstroke. Noble is the second-fastest entrant, just 0.02 seconds off that record herself, with Piskorska the 3rd seed. Eunji Lee, entered on 28.73, has won bronze in both the 100 and 200 backstroke but will face a tough challenge to do so in this sprint event. South Africa’s Olivia Nel could be one to watch after she dropped a second in the 100 freestyle.

Last night’s 1500 free champion Aleksandr Stepanov will be back in the water for the heats of the 800 free today as the fastest seed. Davide Marchello, who was 3rd in that race, is the second seed in 7:53.32 with Ryan Erisman the top American in 7:54.64, good enough for the fourth-fastest entry time. Just like in the 1500, only 11 men are entered in the heats for the men.
