Day 3 will see a much shorter prelims session than the first two days of the meet. There are just five events in total, four individual and one relay.
Mason Laur leads the way in the men’s 200 fly as the only swimmer entered under 1:55, but the top three seeds are separated by just 0.21 seconds. While the U.S. did not compete in Chengdu two years ago, both Laur and 3rd seed Jack Dalhgren were on the podium that summer at the Pan American Games, with Laur taking the win and Dahlgren taking bronze. They both set best times at U.S. nationals this year, although wang kuan hung, the second seed from Chinese Taipei, was the silver medalist two years ago by just three-hundredths of a second and will be aiming one step higher this time. In total there are 19 men entered under two minutes, setting the stage for a quick heats session.
Leah Shackley and Kennedy Noble, fresh from going 1-2 in the 200 back, are the only two swimmers entered under a minute in the 100 as they lead the entrants by nearly two seconds. Shackley broke the WUG record in that final yesterday and both these swimmers are entered significantly faster than the 100 record of 59.29, set by Katharine Berkoff in 2019.
There is a cluster of women between 1:00 and 1:01 behind them, with 100 bronze medalist Eunji Lee in the middle of that pack. Adela Piskorska, the 3rd seed, won the event in 2023 and will have designs on returning to the podium.
After dropping chunks of time in the 100 through the first two days in Berlin, Ben Delmar and Dawid Wiekiera could be the two to beat in the men’s 100 breast. Delmar dropped over a second to break 1:00 for the first time, and the 200 is his better event. Aleksei Sudarov however is the top seed and the only swimmer entered with a time under 2:10, but added three seconds in the 200 IM to miss out on the final after coming in as the 3rd seed. Ivo Kros, Alessandro Fusco and Carl Ait Kaci were all finalists in the 100 and will aim to make it back again, along with future Indiana swimmer Josh Bey.
A small field in the men’s 1500 free will see just 11 swimmers dive in, with Russia’s Aleksandr Stepanov and USA’s Carson Hick separated by less than two-tenths of a second as the top two seeds. Ale Enyeart and Davide Marchello were finalists in the 400 free on Day 1, but for most of the field this is their first race of the week.
Well round things off this morning with the mixed medley relay heats. The U.S. have won both of the relays contested so far, and after some strong performances in all the stroke 100s so far are the favourite to continue that streak. David King will lead off, and is joined by Nate Germonprez, Ella Welch and Isabel Ivey.
