2025 World Championships: Summer McIntosh and Leon Marchand Win “Swimmer of the Meet”

2025 World Championships

With the dust settled in the pool in Singapore, Canadian Summer McIntosh and Frenchman Leon Marchand have been named the Women’s and Men’s “Swimmer of the Meet” by World Aquatics, respectively.

World Aquatics determines its “Swimmer of the Meet” awards based on performances in indvidual swims, utilizing the scoring below. Notably, relay swims do not count towards the points total. In the instance of a tie between swimmers, the winner is determined based on performance points using the World Aquatics Points Table.

Points Breakdown:

  • 1st Place: 5 points
  • 2nd Place: 3 points
  • 3rd Place: 2 points
  • 4th Place: 1 point
  • Individual World Record: 2 points/record

2025 World Championships – Final Medal Table

For McIntosh, this marks her first time winning “Swimmer of the Meet” following a dominant performance that saw her win 4 individual gold medals, along with 1 bronze medal. The young Canadian star picked up victories in the 400 freestyle, 400 IM, 200 IM, and 200 butterfly, along with a bronze in the 800 freestyle. En route to winning those medals, McIntosh also threw down some of the fastest performances in history. In the 200 butterfly, she posted the 2nd-fastest performance of all-time, setting a Championship record of 2:01.99, nearly besting Liu Zige’s 2009 world record of 2:01.81. She also broke the Championship Record in the 400 IM, finishing well ahead of the field with a 4:25.78, just shy of her own World Record in the event. With those performances, McIntosh racked up a total of 22 points.

Marchand picks up his second “Swimmer of the Meet” title after winning it in 2023 as well. Despite racing a reduced schedule compared to the Paris Olympic Games, Marchand still managed to walk away from Singapore with 2 individual gold medals and a world record. Starting his week off with a bang, Marchand wasted no time in establishing himself as the fastest swimmer in history in the 200 IM semi-finals, breaking Ryan Lochte’s longstanding World Record of 1:54.00 by nearly 1.5 seconds with a 1:52.69. In the final, he couldn’t quite match his record-setting time, but still posted the 2nd fastest time in history en route to gold (1:53.68). The 400 IM was Marchand’s only other individual event, which he took full advantage of. In the final, Marchand easily bested the field, winning by 3.5 seconds in a time of 4:04.73 to secure his 2nd title of the week. Marchand’s performance in the 200 IM makes him the only swimmer to have broken an individual World Record in Singapore, contributing to his 12 point total.

Summer will smoke ledecky in LA

At WC2025 Singapore, we witnessed the early stages of Summer McIntosh’s transformation into a Red Bull Media House product. Let’s hope that the deal’s performance-driven incentives do not push her toward a win-at-all-costs mentality, risking the loss of the poise and sportsmanship that once set her apart. For background, research linked below. (Surprising the Swimswam brain trust has not picked up on this.)

People have already forgotten about Phelps reaction after he was beaten by Biedermann in 2009 Rome.

Typical Americans:

Double standard and hypocrites.

Bravo 👏👏👏 to Summer and Leon. But the fact remains that World Aquatics needs to raise the prize money 💰💰💰. It is pennies on the dollar 💰💰💰. Leon sets a world record and he gets 30k? Give me a break! It’s a joke 🤣🤣🤣. How often are world records set? It’s time for a World Aquatics to raise the prize money 💰💰💰 period. Additionally, all future World Championships need to be set in a basketball arena or a soccer or football stadium. It has long been proven that holding the World Championships in a major arena the stakes are higher for the athletes, the spectators and the sport of swimming. Swimming needs to move into the big league category. Stop… Read more »

I think going 2:01 in 200 fly and being mad is pretty bad ass, I personally love it.

The only interesting person I’m looking forward to see in future is YU ZIDI, that girl, hopefully she continues with her trajectory, she should be swimming in the 4:20s in the 4IM come 2027

Or she might disappear into oblivion. We’ll have to wait and see.

Maybe Bowman will ruin McIntosh like he ruined Agnel a decade ago. We’ll have to wait and see.

I can’t see her parents allowing anything that they are not in agreement with!
