The first full day of the 2025 Division II NCAA Championships is here in Indianapolis. This morning will feature heats of the 200 IM and 50 free. The 1000 free, which is a timed finals event, will also be swum today.
Last night’s session kicked the meet off with a bang, as Tampa broke the Division II record in the men’s 800 free relay.

Drury made a big statement to kick this prelims session off, seeing 5 swimmers land in the top 8 and advance to tonight’s ‘A’ final. They were led by Mellie Wijk, who clocked the field-leading 1:58.81. Wijk was just off her season best of 1:58.00 but swam a well-rounded race, splitting 25.60 on fly, 29.70 on back, 33.97 on breast, and 29.54 on freestyle.
Drury teammates Claire Conover, Aurora Duncan, Jonette Lagreid, and Maria Fe Munoz all finished in the top 8 as well. Duncan notably blew away her season best of 2:03.49, clocking a 2:00.37 to finish 5th this morning.
The only other swimmer than Wijk to go under 2:00 this morning was Nova Southeastern’s Emilia Ronningdal, who swam a 1:59.94. Ronningdal has been as fast as 1:59.47 this season.

Though they didn’t put 5 into the ‘A’ final this time, Drury still had a very strong showing in the men’s 200 IM, where Ivan Adamchuk led the field with a 1:44.55. That swim earned the top seed for tonight’s final by over a second, and impressively, he was more than a second off his season best of 1:43.13. Like Wihk, he swam a balanced race, splitting 22.31 on fly, 25.86 on back, 30.66 on breast, and 25.72 on free.
Drury also saw Alejandro Villarejo, Joao Nogueira, and Davi Mourao advance to the ‘A’ final for tonight, giving them 9 ‘A’ finalists in the first 2 events. Villarejo and U Indy’s Jeremias Pock tied for 2nd this morning with a time of 1:45.89. For Pock, that swim comes in well off his season best of 1:44.04, which is 2nd only to Adamchuk, while Villarejo’s swim marks a new season best for him.

The biggest swim of the morning came in the women’s 50 free, where Augustana’s Bryn Greenwaldt clocked a 21.92 to shatter the DII record in the event. Greenwaldt’s swim brings the record under 22 seconds for the first time. Her previous best was the 22.09 she swam a few weeks ago at her conference meet.
Of note, Kirabo Namutebi, the previous record holder, came in 2nd this morning with a 22.27. So, not only does Greenwaldt hold the record now, she also comes into finals with a considerable margin over the rest of the field.
This was a big event for Nova Southeastern, as they putt 3 swimmers into tonight’s ‘A’ final. Kristina Orban, Maya Esparza, and Zsofia Kurdi will be representing the Sharks this evening.
Lynn also had multiple swimmers make the ‘A’ final, as Luna Mertins was 2nd in 22.31 and Laura Dekoninck was 6th in 22.79.

Lynn had a strong showing in the men’s 50 free as well, with Maurice Grabowski clocking the top time of the morning with a 19.45. Grabowski tied with Tampa’s Tibor Tistan for the top time. Tibor holds the fastest season best in the field, already having been 19.31 this year. Meanwhile, Grabowski clipped his season best of 19.48 this morning.
Tampa earned a 2nd swimmer in tonight’s ‘A’ final, as Caleb Brandon came in 7th with a 19.81.
Imagine breaking the NCAA record in swimming two days before competing at track NCAA. Congratulations Bryn! Definitely can’t count Kirabo out though. Amazing competitor.
