We see an almost full house tonight, with no scratches beyond those enforced by the ‘2 Per Nation’ rule. European Aquatics brought this in back in 2019, allowing up to four swimmers from each country to compete in the heats but only two to make it through to any finals.

The biggest name to miss out thanks to that is British backstroker Ollie Morgan, who holds the 100 back British Record in long course. He placed 11th in the heats of the 200 backstroke this morning in a big best time of 1:51.58, but was 0.02 seconds behind countryman Jack Skerry (1:51.56) to miss out. Luke Greenbank took top spot among the Brits, placing 2nd in 1:50.39.

Diego Mira Albaledejo also missed out for Spain, finishing 13th overall but behind Hugo Gonzalez and Ivan Martinez Sota. Both of them qualified in the top 7, with Gonzalez setting a new personal best of 1:50.65

Francesco Lazzeri was another victim of the rule in the men’s 50 fly, finishing a tenth behind Michele Busa in 9th. Busa and Simone Stefani will be Italy’s representatives in tonight’s semi-finals.

A Plethora of swimmers missed out in the men’s 100 breast. Italian’s Ludovico Art Viberti and Gianluca Mancini, who placed 7th and 8th, were only 3rd and 4th among their countrymen, and join Jeremias Pock and Jan Malte Grafe of Germany in watching from the sidelines this evening. Grafe is the World Junior Record holder in the long course 50 with a time of 26.95, set this summer at the World Junior Championships.

Arno Kamminga is the 5th and final swimmer watching on, as Florida’s Koen de Groot and a red-hot Caspar Corbeau took the Netherland’s two places in the semi-finals. Kamminga, who missed the Singapore World Championships through injury, was 57.73 this morning, just over two seconds off his best of 55.79.
