Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheet
After a 2nd place finish and achieving an NCAA Invite time in last night’s 500 free, ASU junior Deniz Ertan will have the morning off. Ertan, who previously represented Georgia Tech and is competing in her 3rd different conference championships has scratched out of the 400 IM. The Turkish national was the #3 seed behind teammates Charli Brown and Sonia Vaishnani. Ertan still appears on the psych sheet in the 200 fly and 1650.
Based on recent events, it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock, but defending Big 12 Champion in the men’s 400 IM, Danny Berlitz, has scratched out of the event. The #6 seed, Berlitz, was seeded with a 3:48.39 and also scratched out the 200 IM yesterday, opting to instead swim the 50 free, where he went a best time. This morning, Berltiz will take on the 200 free, where he is the 15th seed. Entered with a 1:36.64, Berlitz has already been as fast as 1:34.93, when he led off West Virginia’s 800 free relay, setting a new school record in both the relay and individual event.
The only other projected A-finalist to scratch out of the morning session besides Ertan and Berlitz is Houston’s Evelyn Entrekin. Seeded 7th in the 200 free, the sophomore still appears on the psych sheet in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, where she is the 4th and 14th seed, respectively.
TCU’s Geremia Freri and Kornel Kohalmi have both scratched out of two events this morning. Freri, who was the top seed in the 200 IM yesterday morning but struggled in the prelims, placing just 20th, has dropped both the 100 fly and 20o free. Kohalmi, who was 20th in the 500 free last night, has dropped both the 400 IM and 200 free.
