2023 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Texas really came to play on Day 2 of the Men’s NCAA Championships, following up their record-breaking performance on Wednesday night in the 800 free relay by putting themself right in the thick of the team race on Thursday.

The Longhorns currently sit second in the team standings with 165 points, 19 back of Cal, after outperforming their psych sheet projections by a whopping 68.5 points on the day.

The two keys for Texas on the day were Luke Hobson winning the 500 free after he was seeded outside of scoring position (though he was heavily favored to finish first or second), and the 200 free relay putting up 24 points after they were seeded out of the top 16 as well.

Indiana was the only other team to outperform their seed by over 20 points on the day, going +27.5, while NC State, Cal and Wisconsin also hit double digits. The Badgers were pushed forward by Jake Newmark, who had a pair of big swims in the 500 free to place fourth after being seeded 15th.

The biggest droppers were Florida (-33.5) and Louisville (-25.5). The Gators lost big points relative to seed in the 50 free when Adam Chaney missed earning a second swim as the third seed.

Cal moved up big in the 50 free thanks to Jack Alexy coming through and placing sixth after being seeded out of the top 16.
