Following the conclusion of their respective District Championship meets, Florida high school swimming teams in Class 3A and 4A wrapped up their Regional meets last week, which serve as qualifiers for the State Championships.

FHSAA CLASS 3A REGION CHAMPIONS

  • Region 1: Ponte Vedra girls, Allen D Nease boys
  • Region 2: Land O Lakes girls, Freedom boys
  • Region 3: Saint Petersburg girls, Jesuit boys
  • Region 4: Saint Thomas girls, Saint Thomas boys

CLASS 3A REGION HIGHLIGHTS

Girls

Some of the top performances for the girls came from Region 1, where Ponte Vedra senior Ann Wohlgemuth led the way with a pair of individual victories and two key relay swims.

Wohlgemuth, a UGA commit, topped the 100 back (54.22) and the 100 fly (55.00) in Region 1, earning her the top seed in both events for the State Championships. Her time in the 100 back earned her an All-America auto cut (AA-A), and the 100 fly earned her a consideration cut (AA-C) and was also a new best time.

Wohlgemuth’s 100 back best stands at 53.85, set last season when she placed second at the state championships.

She also led off Ponte Vedra’s 200 medley relay (1:46.73) in 25.43 and anchored the team’s 200 free relay (1:35.76) in 23.35, which both earned the top seed for the state championships as well.

Another top performer in Region 1 was Allen D. Nease sophomore Charlotte Driesse, who posted the top 3A times overall in the 200 IM (2:04.38) and 100 free (52.08), the former being a lifetime best. Driesse also set a PB of 23.98 in the 50 free leading off the school’s 200 free relay.

Reigning 50 free state champion Maryn McDade put up the top time in that event from Region 1 in 23.82, having won the 3A crown last year in a PB of 23.37. McDade is a junior at Fleming Island High School.

The other swimmers that established top seeds for the State Championships came out of Region 3.

Countryside senior Summer Cardwell clocked 1:51.15 to lead the 200 free, and she was also second-fastest in the 100 fly (55.93), trailing Wohlgemuth.

In the 500 free, Cape Coral junior Melissa Blaine (4:58.82) and Saint Petersburg freshman Zoie Fjare (4:59.51) put up the top two times from Region 3.

Sunlake senior Madison Houck had the top swims in Region 2, winning the 100 free (53.03) and 100 back (57.90).

In Region 4, junior Julianne McCranie and sophomore Anastasia Lutz both won two events to help lead the Saint Thomas Aquinas to the girls’ title.

Boys

Region 1 for the boys was highlighted by Gainesville junior Michael Mullen, who produced AA-C cuts en route to winning the 200 IM (1:50.43) and 100 breast (56.43), securing the top seed for the state championships.

Allen D. Nease senior Matthew Koziol was the other top performer overall coming out of Region 1, clocking 46.97 in the 100 free.

Region 3 was headlined by reigning 3A state champion Andrew Taylor, a Countryside senior who won the 500 free and 200 IM at last year’s championships.

Taylor clocked 4:27.68 in the 500 free to earn the #1 seed, and he should have a lot more in the tank for the season finale with his PB sitting down at 4:19.17. The Florida commit also went 1:51.28 in the 200 IM, tops in Region 3 and second overall behind Mullen.

Another reigning state champ competing in Region 3 was Seminole senior Andrew Billitto, an Auburn commit who won the 50 free last year in a personal best time of 20.56. Billitto was the only swimmer to crack 21 seconds in the 3A Region meets, touching in 20.86.

Billitto was also the second-fastest swimmer overall in the 100 fly, touching in 48.92 to trail only Mitchell Ledford over in Region 4.

Ledford, an NC State commit who won the 3A title last season in 46.86, clocked 48.67 to set himself up to vie for a repeat title at the State Championships on November 4. He also swam a best time in the 100 back (50.96) for the top seed.

Region 4 also saw Saint Thomas sophomore Alex Mansur post the leading time in the 200 free (1:42.52), and he was .06 back of Region 1’s Koziol for the top time in the 100 free (47.03).
