2013 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships in Montreal July 24-29

Hundreds of young swimmers will gather in Montreal this week for the 2013 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships.

More than 900 athletes from 159 clubs are expected to battle for titles from Wednesday through Monday at Parc Jean-Drapeau Aquatic Complex on Ile Ste-Hélène. Female swimmers will compete in the 12-and-under, 13-and-under, 15-and-under and 16-18 age groups, while the males are divided into 13-and-under, 14-and-under, 15-and-under, 16-and-under and 17-18.

This massive event, which features 250 races, will require more than 150 officials and volunteers from across Canada. A staff of 20 volunteers has been working on the organization for several months.

There will plenty to cheer about for local fans with 175 swimmers set to compete from 31 clubs in Quebec. Also on hand are some members from Canada’s national junior team who qualified for FINA World Junior Championships last week at the Summer Nationals in Pointe-Claire.

The host Friends of Swimming (les amis de natation) expects more than 5,000 spectators to attend the races over the five days. In both 2009 and 2011 the group hosted the age group nationals and received the award for best hosting of a Canadian national event at the Quebec Sports Gala Awards.

Competition in the pool will take place from Wednesday through Sunday, with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. each day. The open water portion of the competition is set for 9 a.m. Monday at the nearby Olympic rowing basin.
