200 Butterflier Clay Hering Verbally Commits to Georgia Tech

Clay Hering Georgia Tech commitButterflier and middle-distance freestyler Clay Hering has verbally committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Besides being one of the fastest 200 butterfly recruits coming out of his junior year of high school in program history, Hering is also a high-character commitment for this program: he’s an Eagle Scout and the student body president at Page High School in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Hering’s best times in yards:

  • 100 free – 47.55
  • 200 free – 1:41.34
  • 500 free – 4:43.05
  • 100 fly – 50.26
  • 200 fly – 1:49.82

Hering’s best time in the long course 200 fly is a U.S. Open qualifying time, and he adds Winter Juniors qualification in the 100 and 200 freestyles in long course. While he’s only about a second away from cracking the program’s all-time top-10 in the 200 fly, expanding his skill set with improvements in his 100 fly, 200 free, and 500 free could really drive up his value before arriving in Atlanta.

“I chose Georgia Tech because it has everything that I was looking for in a school,” Hering said. “It’s in the south, and it has great academics combined with a strong swimming program. My recruitment visit there was awesome; the guys really took me on and made me feel like a part of the team.”

Hering is a lifelong member of the Greensboro Swimming Association (12 years and counting), and he also says that his hometown played a role in the decision-making process. Greensboro is the headquarters of the ACC, and Georgia Tech is a member of that conference.
