August 18th, 2025 News

There are 8 candidates for the USA Swimming At-Large Board of Directors positions in 2025, along with 2 candidates for Athlete positions. Voting members of the House of Delegates at the USA Swimming Annual Business Meeting from September 24-27, 2025 in Denver will be eligible to vote.

They will be vying for three At-Large Representative seats on the 14 member Board of Directors. Each member of the House of Delegates may cast up to three votes, and two of the three chosen individuals must be coaches to maintain the ratio of coaches on the board.

Only athlete representatives are eligible to vote for the athlete seats.

The list includes two of the three outgoing Board of Directors members who are vying to keep their seats. Clark Hammond and Ira Klein will run for re-election.

While outgoing Board Chair Chris Brearton will remain on the Board of Directors as the immediate past chair, there is one other spot opening because Bob Vincent resigned to take over as USA Swimming’s interim CEO.

2025 Board of Directors Candidates

Chosen by the nomination committee:

Self Nominated:

The coach requirements mean that only one of Hammond, Lang, and Senn are eligible for election.

The election comes as the Board of Directors comes under intense scrutiny for a number of things, but most imminently going almost a full year without finding a permanent replacement for CEO Tim Hinchey and telling only a half-truth when the first choice, Chrissi Rawak, ultimately resigned from the position shortly after accepting it.

USA Swimming has very strict guidelines on what candidates for the Board of Directors may and may not do in their campaigns ahead of the election.

At a recent Board of Directors meeting, these guidelines were softened a bit, but candidates are still not allowed to give independent interviews about their candidacy or ideas for the organization.

Board of Directors updated campaign rules:

Klein was accused of “overt campaigning” during the 2022 election and reached a settlement with the organization.

SwimSwam was unable to find any social media posts by any of the candidates stating their platforms, and most of them are not active on social media. Their bios, included in the Election Guide, sometimes include brief campaign statements, but when they do they are always vague and don’t address specific issues facing the organization.

Raykovich’s bio is unique in that he did lay out specific challenges that he saw as most important to address:

…USA Swimming faces increasingly difficult financial challenges with a limited number of available facilities, barriers to on-boarding new participants, lengthy competitions and the NIL influence on collegiate swimming. We need to get ahead of these challenges. Coaches, Athletes,
Officials and Volunteers can and must work together to resolve these complications.

Very Brief Bios on each Candidate (read the Election Guide for more complete information)

  • Brent Lang – A former swimmer at the University of Michigan and 1988 Olympian, Lang spent nine years as the CEO of publicly traded Vocera Communications, which was sold to Stryker in 2022. Gemmell, 34, was a 2011 World Champion in the 5km open water event and won individual silver in 2009 in the 10k. He also swam the 1500 free at the 2012 Olympic Games in the pool, finishing 9th. He is now working as a Director in KPMG’s Cloud Engineering & Artificial Intelligence division.

USA Swimming is so lucky that Brent Lang is willing to be part of its BOD. He has an impressive track record in business and board governance. Brent did an incredible job sheparding USA Gymnastics through their troubles. I agree with Mark below, I cannot think of a better person to be on the BOD.

Feel like Jack would be interesting. He’s not a get off my lawn, back in my day guy. And he won’t hold his opinion to himself. He could really be an asset if given the chance.

Feel like someone should read the book on McKinsey. Not sure that is a plus for a candidate, especially if you want change from the current culture.

I look at the list of delegates and there is no Mel Stewart or Michael Phelps? huh?
I hope Braden you can opine on pros/cons of each candidate.

Clark, Bob Vincent, and Kennith need to go yesterday. No excuse. There should be a separate motion to remove Kenneth for incompetent fiscal progress why anyone put him in as finance chair is beyond me. They are children in male bodies. Disgusting how they act and they have zero self awareness. Complete selfishness to run.
