For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Linnea Florin of Long Grove, Illinois, has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study as part of Utah’s class of 2030. She publicized the news on Instagram, writing:

I am SO beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Utah! I would like to thank my friends, family and my coaches for the incredible amount of support they’ve given me throughout this entire process. Lastly, I want to thank Coach Jonas, Coach Aly, and the rest of the coaching staff at Utah for this amazing opportunity. GO UTES!!

Florin is currently in the midst of her senior year at Adlai E. Stevenson High School, where she has been a member of the varsity swim team since her freshman year. Outside of the high school season, she swims with RISE Aquatic Club. She’s a pure sprinter, strong in the 100 butterfly in addition to the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Florin most recently competed at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championships in November, where she put together one of the best meets of her career. She broke 55 seconds for the first time in prelims with a personal best of 54.93, then placed seventh in the final in a time of 55.86. She was also a key piece of Stevenson’s relay lineup, helping the team win the 200 medley relay with a 24.28 fly leg, earn runner-up in the 200 free relay splitting 23.33, and take third in the 400 free relay with a 52.02 leadoff. She went even faster in prelims, splitting 22.93 on the 200 free relay and posting a 51.36 personal best on the 400 free relay leadoff.

A four-time state finalist in the 100 fly, Florin has steadily climbed the rankings from 25th as a freshman to eighth as a sophomore, and sixth as a junior. She’s been a fixture on Stevenson’s relays since day one, making 10 ‘A’ finals across four years and collecting five medals while never placing lower than sixth.

Her time progression shows different patterns across events, with the 100 fly showing minimal improvement for two years after she posted a 55.52 in November 2023 before breaking through at State, while the 100 free has seen consistent year-over-year drops from the 53-second range as a freshman down to the 51-low as a senior. Her 50 free best of 23.68, set in October 2023, has stood for more than two years.

Beyond short course yards, she had the opportunity to represent Team USA on the international front at the World Cup – Carmel leg this past October, the first time she raced in the short course meters pool. She contested the 100 fly, placing 30th out of 33 competitors with a time of 1:03.55.

Top SCY Times:
  • 50 Freestyle: 23.68
  • 100 Freestyle: 51.36
  • 100 Butterfly: 54.93
Utah is led by head coach Jonas Persson, who took over both the men’s and women’s programs in 2022. The women finished fifth out of 10 teams at the 2025 Big-12 Championships, just 44.5-points behind Texas Christian in fourth.

The conference meet scores ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals, and Florin’s lifetime best in the 100 fly is already under the 55.09 it took to make the ‘C’ heat. She’s a bit off the sprint free cutoffs, which required times of 23.17 and 50.48 to earn a second swim.

On the team’s current depth chart, Florin would rank first in the 100 fly, fifth in the 100 free, and sixth in the 50 free. When accounting for graduations and incoming recruits, she would move up to fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free while remaining the top 100 flyer, positioning her as a key contributor from day one.

Florin joins Ana Diedrichs, Elena Amos, and Avery Whorton in committing to the Utes’ class of 2030. Diedrichs is a 53.9 sprint backstroker with sprint free bests of 24.0/50.6, while Amos brings versatility as a sprinter with 23.4/51.25 bests and 55-point swims in the 100 fly and 100 back. Whorton rounds out the class as a distance swimmer strong in freestyle, IM, and fly.
