WashU Men, Saint Louis Women Earn Wins In Split Dual

St. Louis, Mo., September 24, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving teams opened up the season with a home meet against nearby Division I Saint Louis University.

The men’s team defeated SLU 155-75 while the women’s team fell 147-89.

Men
In the first event of the day, the team of Kyle WolfordKevin HaoBarclay Dale and Michael Kincheloe won the field, swimming to a time of 1:33.70. Also among the top five was the team of Alex McCormick, Ethan WoolbertMason Rhode and Ryan Wierschem, which placed third with a time of 1:37.33.

Junior Mason Kelber won the 1,000 freestyle, clocking a time of 9:50.96. Kenneth Yeh and Matthew Larsen also finished among the top five, racing to times of 10:06.45 and 10:17.32, respectively.

First-year Ryan Hillery claimed the 200 freestyle, winning with a time of 1:45.03. Mark Lipkin took second with a time of 1:46.44 while Danny Sibley tied for third with SLU’s Joe Feder, both swimming to a time of 1:47.40.

The wins continued as senior Barclay Dale won the 50 freestyle, swimming to a time of 21.32. Sophomore Austin Bick took second in 21.49 while first-year Kai Garren tied for fourth with SLU’s Jack Thorell with a time of 21.73.

Senior Kevin Hao won the 200 IM, racing to a time of 1:55.39 while senior Nathan Katz took second in 1:56.76. First-year Jonathan Kim rounded out the top three, finishing in 1:57.90.

Dale was victorious again the 100 butterfly, taking first in 50.49. Junior Jonathan Ma finished third with a time of 51.22 and Hillery claimed fifth in 53.03.

In the 100 freestyle, Bick claimed the top spot in 47.10 while Garren took second with a time of 48.11.

Wolford won the 100 backstroke, swimming to a time of 52.55. Behind him in second was sophomore Alex McCormick with a time of 53.15.

Kelber won his second race of the day in the 500 freestyle, swimming to a time of 4:46.67. Lipkin finished fourth with a time of 4:53.98 while Yeh took fifth in 4:55.61.

The Bears finished the individual swimming events strong, as Hao won the 100 breaststroke in 58.70. Katz took third with a time of 59.64 while Kim finished fourth in 59.65.

WashU closed out the swimming portion with a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Bick, Garren, Kelber and Ma won with a time of 1:25.83. Coming in third was the team of Pace Edwards, Lipkin, Sibley and Justin Rockaway with a time of 1:28.69. The group of Jeffrey Forbes, Yeh, Brendan Long and Rick Reinhard rounded out the top five with a time of 1:33.46.

The Bears had one diver compete against the Billikens. Elliot Polikowski finished second on the 3-meter with a score of 143.85. SLU’s Harrison Misemer won with 183.22 points.

Women
The Bears opened up the day with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Kylie JuanGrace WakiyamaGrace Carey and Noelle Diclemente won with a time of 1:49.63. WashU also took fourth as the team of Natalia Castillo, Riya Sahota, Amanda Yu and Stephanie Bowater finished in 1:53.47.

WashU’s top finisher in the 1,000 freestyle was sophomore Alexis Hernandez-Flores, who finished in 11:11.84.

First-year Sandra Meszaros was the top finisher for the Bears in the 200 freestyle, swimming to a time of 1:59.98. First-year Kiara Crumbley took third in 2:01.28.

First-year Lauren Antonowich was the top finisher for WashU in the 50 freestyle, taking fourth place in 25.33. Diclemente took fifth in 25.39.

In the 200 IM, Carey was the top finisher for WashU, taking second in 2:13.70. Sahota, a first-year, rounded out the top five in fifth, swimming to a time of 2:15.68.

Meszaros won the 100 butterfly for her first collegiate career win, racing to a time of 58.22. Carey took fourth in 1:00.17.

Antonowich was also the top finisher for the Bears in the 100 freestyle, racing to a time of 55.52. Right behind her in fifth was first-year Caroline Deluca with a time of 56.21.

Senior Abby Wilson took second in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:00.55. Juan was also in the top five, as she finished in fourth with a time of 1:01.06.

Hernandez-Flores was the top finisher for WashU in the 500 freestyle, taking fourth in 5:23.99. Crumbley finished in fifth place with a time of 5:28.75.

Wakiyama, a senior, was victorious for the Bears in the 100 breaststroke, winning by more than a second in 1:07.55. Sahota took second in 1:09.00 while junior Emily Guo finished fourth with a time of 1:11.04.

Wrapping up the swimming action, the Bears took second in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Antonowich, Deluca, Kayleigh Lewis and Meszaros finished with a time of 1:41.54. Rounding out the top five was the team of Grace UldrichIsabella BarrientosMikayla Klein and Alice Han, finishing in 1:45.52.

On the diving side, Rosie Finglass won the 1-meter, racking up 224.17 points. SLU’s Maggie Coffey took second with a score of 210.90.

Finglass was victorious again on the 3-meter board, winning with a total score of 208.50.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, October 1 when they travel to the University of Missouri for a 1 p.m. meet.

ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2021-22 season with a 147-89 victory over Washington University Friday night.

In the men’s competition, WashU claimed a 155-75 win.

The Billiken women, led by Natalie Daniel and Emily Leonard, won eight events. Daniel touched first in the 50 free (24.51) and 100 free (53.51), while Leonard collected victories in the 500 free (5:08.83) and 1000 free (10:31.60). They were joined by Amelia Carlson and Sophie Kishish for a win in the 200 free relay (1:40.13).

Also winning for the women’s team were Tessa Horan in the 200 IM (2:12.21), Lauren Payton in the 200 free (1:58.57) and Emily Smith in the 100 back (58.93).

Harrison Misemer won the men’s 3-meter diving with a score of 183.22.

The Billikens compete in the Butler Duals Sunday, Sept. 26.
