Wagner Women Defeat LIU, Men Lose

Men’s Meet

Staten Island, NY- The Wagner men’s swimming & diving team lost a hard-fought meet to LIU, 128-101 on senior day at the Spiro Sports Center on Friday.

Jack Leighton won two individual races, including the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Freestyle. In the 200 Yard Freestyle, the senior touched the wall at 1:44.40 and in the 100 Yard Freestyle, he hit the wall at 47.54. Teammate Dylna Egan was not far behind in that heat, touching the wall third at 1:50.17.

Leighton also missed a third first-place finish by a hair, hitting the wall second in the 50 Yard Freestyle at 21.58, .03 seconds after LIU’s Alejandro Pascual Del Cid.

The Seahawks posted a win in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:30.86. That foursome was made up of Leighton, Kristian StanczewskiTristan Lee, and Karl Lovett.

Lee had an individual victory himself, hitting the wall at 2:03.91 in the 200 Yard Individual Medley.

Senior Day…

After Friday’s meet at the Spiro Sports Center, senior Jack Leighton was recognized for his Seahawks career.

The Seahawks are back in action for the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships at Spire Institute in Geneva, OH beginning on Tuesday, February 22 and running through Saturday, February 26.

Women’s Meet

Staten Island, NY- The Wagner women’s swimming & diving team won their fourth straight meet, a 190-97 victory over LIU on senior day at the Spiro Sports Center on Friday.

The Green & White got off to a fast start with a victory in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Shamiya GuirreEllie EastwoodJudith Desforges, and Abbie Hassell hit the wall first with a time of 1:46.92.

The momentum stayed on Wagner’s side with Taylor Marjamaa winning the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 10:52.99. Teammate Raquel Rubalcava hit the wall second with a time of 10:54.33. Guirre then picked up an individual win in the 100 Yard Backstroke, posting a time of 58.99.

Eastwood finished her final meet on Grymes Hill strong, posting a victory in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:04.88. The senior also hit the wall first in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:26.71. Her third win of the day came in the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:09.31.

The Seahawks would go on to pick up several more individual victories on the afternoon. Annie Jencova won the 100 Yard Freestyle, hitting the wall at 54.07. Bree Anderson finished first in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:07.39.

Rubalcava and Marjamaa then finished first and second in the 500 Yard Freestyle, with times of 5:19.59 and 5:22.43, respectively.

After Friday’s meet at the Spiro Sports Center, seniors Madeleine DeloreJudith DesforgesEllie EastwoodMaggie Gregory, and Mary Tsianaka were recognized for their careers on Grymes Hill.

Men’s Meet

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU men’s swimming team started the 2022 calendar year on the right foot, beating Wagner 128-101 in their first dual meet since December. The Sharks had multiple first place finishes int the meet, and swept the top three spots in several events.

SHARK BITES

  • LIU started out with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Trajan HoustonStephen TaylorLovro Dodik and Porter LeVasseur won with a time of 1:35.95.
  • Sophomore Lincoln Greseth won the 1000 free in 10:02.00, while Alejandro Pascual Del Cid won the 50 free in 21.55.
  • The Sharks went 1-2-3 in the 100 back, as Daniel Chocano Fernández won the event (53.21), just ahead of teammates Houston (53.44) and Bruno Ferrari (54.44).
  • Giannis Venetos and Taylor went 1-2 in the 100 breast. Venetos won the event with a time of 58.39, while Taylor touched the wall in 59.79. The duo also went 1-2 in the 200 breast, in 2:09.94 for Venetos for first, and 2:12.12 for Taylor in second.
  • Dodik won the 500 free with a time of 5:02.05, while teammate Jose Alfonzo came in second with a time of 5:07.93.
  • The Sharks also swept the 100 fly. Ethan Law (1st – 51.86), Ferrari (2nnd – 53.49) and Benny Karlsson (3rd – 54.75) took the top three spots.
  • Marcell Matyiko exhibitioned in the 200 IM, but swam the fastest time by four seconds, with a 1:59.54.
  • The Sharks capped the night with an exhibition win in the 200 free relay, as Daniel Samouilich, Marcelo CahuvetDrew Ladner and Pascual Del Cid swam a 1:27.55.
  • Up next, the Sharks host Merrimack in LIU Pool. Saturday, February 5 at 1 p.m.

Women’s Meet

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU women’s swimming took on Wagner on the road Friday in the first dual meet of 2022. The Sharks fell to the Seahawks, 190-97.

SHARK BITES

  • The 200 medley relay team of Rea ShehuVenna AndersenJacqueline Grabowski and Lydia Amon came in second with a time of 1:47.55 to lead off the meet.
  • Sophomore Femke Backx won the 200 free with a time of 1:59.85.
  • Ella Johnson also had a first-place finish in the 200 fly, winning the event in 2:05.37. Freshman Annalise Stingle came in second with a time of 2:12.39.
  • Johnson also won the 100 yard butterfly, with a time of 57.39.
  • Grabwoski had a top finish, as she won the 50 free in 24.86.
  • Sara Rodriguez Rubio and Shehu finished second and third in the 100 back, with times of 1:00.33 and 1:00.37 respectively.
  • Andersen also had a second place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.39.
  • Up next, the Sharks host Merrimack, Saturday, February 5 at 1 p.m.
