University of Hawaii Coach Will Resign at the End of the Academic Year

University of Hawaii head coach Victor Wales will resign at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year, the school has confirmed to SwimSwam on Monday. A spokesperson said that the resignation was due to “family reasons.”

Wales has been the head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs at Hawaii since 2005, and has carried the program to several important milestones. That includes leading the women’s team to the 2006 WAC Conference Championship and the 2015 MPSF Conference Championship.

Wales has four conference Coach of the Year honors – once in the MPSF, twice in Conference USA, and once in the WAC.

The Hawaii men finished 31st at the NCAA Championships in Wales’ final season, with one swimmer and one diver in attendance; while the women’s team was 42nd on the strength of a 13th-place finish on the 1-meter from junior Aimee Harrison.

That marks the 4th time the men’s team has had swimmers entered at NCAAs in Wales’ career, which matches the effort of the women’s program under his watch.

Prior to his time at Hawaii, Wales spent four years as the head coach of the San Jose State women, three years as an assistant at Arizona State, and twice was the associate head coach of his alma mater UC Santa Barbara. Wales graduated from UCSB in 1992 where he was a 10-time Big West Champion and a 1990 NCAA Division I All-American.

A posting for the job can be found here.
