The University of North Dakota swimming and diving teams officially opened their 2016-17 season with dual wins over St. Cloud State Friday evening at Hyslop Pool. The Fighting Hawk women won 186.5-108.5 while the UND men were winners by a score of 189-106.
“Tremendous team effort, really pleased with how we raced and executed our race plans. We had some outstanding swims today,” UND head coach Chris Maiello said. “Up and down the lineup, our kids are believing in the training they’re doing and it’s fun to watch them enjoy this process. We had a hard week of training and we’re just looking forward to the next step, particularly getting back to practice tomorrow to work on some things we can clean up pretty easily.”
The women’s 200 medley relay got the meet underway with a 1:46.75 win. Gabi Liedy (10:26.20) finished just in front of teammate Katie Breault (10:31.70) in the 1000 freestyle and later also won the 500 freeestyle (5:06.49). Breault would post the best time in the 200 IM (2:14.03). Megan Wenman earned the first win of her collegiate career with a 1:55.37 time in the 200 freestyle, just out-touching Paige Prestigiacomo (1:55.64). Maddie Derby (57.85) beat out Jess Warfield (57.91) in the 100 backstroke. Steph Frey easily out-distanced the field with her 1:04.22 showing in the 100 breaststroke race and she edged out a pair of teammates to win the 100 free (52.35). Marlena Pigliacampi touched in 2:04.15 in the 200 butterfly and had another win with a 56.35 showing in the 100 fly. Alli Schwab clocked a winning time of 24.25 in the 50 free. Rachel Boodt had a winning time of 2:04.82 in the 200 backstroke. The 400 free relay team recorded tehe best time, touching in 3:34.72.
In diving, Ari Brace won the women’s three-meter event (223.35) and placed second in the one-meter dive with a 201.05 score.
“You never know what you’re going to get that first competition,” UND diving coach Brian Strom said. “It was kind of what I expected, It was a mixed bag, Some things we did well and some other things that we know what we need to work on. We’re just going to get better each week.”
The UND men were just as impressive, winning a bulk of the races contested on the opening day of the collegiate season. The 200 medley relay posted a 1:34.38 winning time to start the meet. Jacob Wielinski dominated the 1000 freestyle, touching more than a half-minute ahead of the field with his 9:25.02 time. He also easily out-distanced the competition in the 500 free with a 4:43.86 clocking. Senior Noah Lucas helped give UND a one-two-three finish in the 200 freestyle with his 1:42.20 time and he later also won the 50 free (20.44) and 100 free (45.77) races. Sam Marlow was the backstroke champion, taking the 100 event in 53.09 and the 200 race in 1:54.80. Ivar Iverson won the 100 breaststroke event (58.52). Joe Perez took his first win of his career with a 2:09.93 victory in the 200 breaststroke and later posted the best time in the 200 IM (1:58.46). Martin Pozniak won the 100 butterfly (51.58).
On the diving boards, freshman Mitch Raihle was the one-meter winner with a 262.85 score while Nick Benson was the three-meter champ (249.45), holding off teammate Sam Howard (245.55).
UND will host Northern Colorado (women only) and South Dakota in a two-day event next Friday and Saturday at Hyslop Pool.

The St. Cloud State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their 2016-17 seasons with a pair of dual meet setbacks against NCAA Division I rival the University of North Dakota on Friday, Oct. 7 in Grand Forks, N.D. The SCSU women’s team lost a 189.5-108.5 match and the men’s team lost their meet by a score of 189-106.
The Huskies will complete their weekend in the pool with the annual SCSU Swimming and Diving Alumni meet on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. The meet will be held at the Halenbeck Hall Aquatic Center and admission is free. Many of the program’s standout alumni swimmers and divers will be back for this event to compete against this year’s squad in a fun-filled competition. The day will be completed by an evening social at the Red Carpet in downtown St. Cloud, Minn.
At UND, the Huskies Robert Leigh won the men’s 200 butterfly with a time of 1.55.65. SCSU also received a first place performance in the women’s 200 breaststroke by Brooke Calvin with a time of 2:24.68.
In the diving well, SCSU’s Britin Thomsen charted a first place finish in the women’s 1M diving event with a score of 239.60. Freshman Ashley Wilson made a strong debut with a first place finish in the women’s 200 IM with a winning time of 2:14.03. Williams Nguyen also added a first place finish in the men’s 200 IM event with a time of 2:02.88.
To wrap up the meets, the SCSU women’s 400 free relay squad of Julie Schmitt, Bridget Opdahl, Kaitlin Heinen and Andrea Bryson scored a first place time of 3:37.58. The SCSU men’s 400 free relay team of Alex Lee, Josh McKeag, Zeke Erickson and Jordan Kinney also won a top place with a time of 3:19.87.
