UBC Holds Commanding Lead in Men’s and Women’s Team Scores After Day 1 of Canada West Champs

The Canada West Regional Swimming Championships kicked off on Friday, and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds got off to a hot start. They are currently leading both the men’s and women’s meets by a large margin after just one day of competition.

Women’s Recap

The first finals session kicked off with the Thunderbirds sweeping the top three spots in the women’s 800 freestyle with Emma O’Croinin bringing home the gold in 8:41.09. Emma Spence finished 2nd (8:52.22), and Ruby Kehler was 3rd (8:52.35).

They followed that performance up with a sweep of the top five spots in the women’s 50 fly, led by Eloise Allen, who touched in 26.27. Brooklyn Wins (26.87) and Sela Wist (27.07) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, grabbing the other two medals for the team.

Wist turned around to win another bronze medal and complete the Thunderbird sweep in the women’s 50 backstroke, which was the next event. She touched in 28.30 to finish behind her teammates.

Kayla Sanchez won the event in a blistering 25.98, coming in more than two seconds ahead of Piper Mitchell‘s 28.05 for 2nd.

The UBC Thunderbirds also won the women’s 800 freestyle relay with their team of Kayla Sanchez, Ruby Kehler, Jade Lo, and Emma O’Croinin touching in 8:00.76 to come in more than 10 seconds ahead of 2nd place team the University of Calgary Dinos.

The Dinos also won the women’s 50 breaststroke with Canadian Worlds team member Alexanne Lepage, who came in first by more than half-a-second. She touched in 30.08 to come in ahead of the Thunderbirds’ Eloise Allen‘s 30.71. The Dinos picked up 3rd in the event with Isabella Duncan‘s 32.21.

Men’s Recap

UBC started the men’s meet in the same fashion, sweeping the men’s 1500 podium. Aiden Kirk won the event in 15:02.62, coming in 20 seconds ahead of teammate Oliver Risk‘s 15:25.44 for 2nd. Tanner Cole rounded out the top three at 15:25.57.

The Thunderbirds also took the top two spots in the men’s 50 fly with Kai Lilienthal winning in 23.11 and Siu Lun Ho finishing 2nd at 23.86. Calgary’s Thomas McDonald finished 3rd in 23.93 to pick up the last medal.

Lilenthal turned around to also win the 50 backstroke, touching in 24.06 to drop nearly a second from his seed time of 24.96. Raben Dommann finished 2nd for the Thunderbirds in 24.47 and Ethan Fast from the Dinos was 24.87 for 3rd.

The Thunderbirds continued their streak with another event win and silver medal in the men’s 50 breaststroke with Ethan Hemeon touching 1st in 27.46, just three hundredths ahead of Justice Migneault‘s 27.49 for 2nd. Calgary’s Stephen Moore was 3rd in 27.55.

The meet ended with UBC winning the 800 freestyle relay with Jake Gaunt, Paul Hebrard, Andrew Coombs, and Raben Dommann taking the top time in 7:11.81, six seconds ahead of Calgary.
