Three Oakland Grizzles Earn Horizon League Honors

INDIANAPOLIS — Tuomas Kiviluoma earned Horizon League Male Swimmer of the Week, Patricia Aschan was tabbed female swimmer of the week and Joe Smith was named male diver of the week announced by the league Tuesday after all earned event wins over the weekend at the UIC quad meet.

Kiviluoma, a senior from Espoo, Finland, won the 100- (51.26) and 200-yard IM (3:23.27), 100 butterfly (50.39) and was a part of the winning 400 freestyle (3:03.52) and medley (3:23.27) relays as the Oakland men’s swimming and diving team cruised to wins over Wright State (254-106), Green Bay (264-107) and host UIC (218-154) Nov. 4-5.

Aschan, a senior from Raisio, Finland, raced to event wins in the 200 (2:04.38) and 400 IM (4:23.07), 200 free (1:51.82) and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:28.62). The Golden Grizzlies defeated all three league opponents on the women’s side also by scores of 236-136 (UIC), 311-52 (Wright State) and 292-80 (Green Bay).

Smith, a sophomore from Chelsea, Mich., won the 3-meter board with a score of 313.45 while also taking third on the 1-meter board with a score of 288.25. This is his third weekly honor of his career.

Oakland will be back in action as both teams will host Eastern Michigan Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Aquatic Center.
