Though Caeleb Dressel has already swum at this meet, taking on the 200 free prelims and helping the U.S. to bronze in the mixed medley relay, this is the first of his main events this meet.
Cate Campbell anchored the Australians in 50.93, the fastest female freestyle leg in history, as they won gold in the 400 mixed medley relay in a new Commonwealth Record.
Chase Kalisz will compete in the men’s 400 IM on day 1 of the Pan Pacific Championships.

Sarah Sjostrom will look for her third gold medal of the meet on day 6 in Glasgow.
Caeleb Dressel is one of three men ever to break 50 seconds in the 100 fly, and he’s the heavy favorite at Pan Pacs even without approaching his best time so far this year.
Start lists for the first day of Pan Pacs show a number of notable scratches, including third and fourth seeds Ariarne Titmus and Emma McKeon following up on their hints at dropping the 200 free, #3 400 IM seed Sydney Pickrem scratching all three of her events for Canada and American Caeleb Dressel opting out of the 100 breast.
It’s 2-time World Champion Chase Kalisz of the USA vs. Japanese stars Kosuke Hagino and Daiya Seto for the IM titles.
Michael Andrew, the youngest swimmer in history to turn pro, broke through at the 2018 U.S. Nationals. How fast will he swim at the Pan Pacific Championships?
Coming before the individual events of all legs but the 100 breast, the mixed medley relay will set each federation up for some tricky ‘blind’ lineup decisions as the U.S. chases its own world record and Australia closes in on the Americans.
The Americans should battle Brazil for the men’s 4×100 free relay gold… but we don’t know who will be on the American team. Even the status of 2017 World champ Caeleb Dressel (pictured) is in the wind.
With USA Swimming selecting its 2019 World Championships roster based on combined results of 2018 Nationals and 2018 Pan Pacs, this week’s Pan Pacific Championships’ meet-within-a-meet will be the competition between U.S. swimmers for top-2 billing in each event.

The fifth and final day of prelims will feature the 200 IM, 50 free, women’s 1500, and men’s 800.
Will Grant is the top seed heading into the men’s 100 back final in Irvine.
