SMU Women Move To 2-0 With Dominant Win Over New Mexico State

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women’s swimming and diving came away with its second straight dual win of the season after 161-77 sweep over New Mexico State on Friday night at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

The victory improved the Mustangs’ dual record to 2-0 on the young season. Three swimmers posted two event wins each.

Ilektra Lebl won a pair of events, opening individual scoring with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 10:09.63. She followed it up by pacing the field with a time of 4:57.48 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Gabi Grobler continued to lead the team in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking a 2:02.50 for the win. She was also the winner in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:19.09.

Johanna Gudmundsdottir also doubled for the Ponies, picking up her wins in the 50-yard freestyle (23.63) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.36).

SMU also picked up top points from Indra Vandenbussche (200 free, 1:51.75), Olivia Grossklaus (200 fly, 2:00.44) and Jenna Watson (200 back, 2:05.05).

Johanna Holloway and Nicole Stambo split diving wins to lead the event, with Holloway coming away with the win on 3 meter (303.83) and Stambo on 1 meter (290.63). Both divers stayed above the NCAA Zone qualifying score on 3 meter, while Stambo once again hit the mark on 1 meter.

In relay action, Grobler, Maddy LewisValentina Becerra and Gudmundsdottir opened the event with a 200-yard medley relay win (1:43.47), and Alex Stevens, Vandenbussche, Tiffanie Ruan and Lebl won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:26.68) to close the evening.

SMU is back in action Nov. 18-20 for the SMU Invite, which also features Fresno State, Hawaii and Drury.

DALLAS – Led by Jordan Andrusak and Lindsay Puhalski, the NM State swimming and diving program fell to the SMU Mustangs 161-77 at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

A native of Victoria, British Colombia, Andrusak (2:24.77) finished three seconds clear of teammates Skylar Welle and Natalia Villa.

Other Aggie highlights included the 400 yard freestyle relay of Aimee BurtonLindsay PuhalskiLauren Hemburrow and Neza Kocijan finishing first and Burton finishing third in the 50 free (23.96) and fourth in the 100 free (52.82).

With the setback today, the Aggies fall to 1-2 on the season in meets. The Aggies dropped the opener against Northern Colorado back on Oct. 9 and defeated New Mexico in a dual-meet last weekend (197-156).

“Despite the loss, the score does not indicate the efforts and quality performances we had today. We had over a dozen season-best times today and swam well despite the travel. We faced a very good team today and learned a lot through this experience.”

UP NEXT:
The Aggies return to action tomorrow (Nov. 6) for a dual-meet at North Texas. The action gets started at 11 a.m.
