A 28-strong Spanish squad has been revealed by the nation’s swimming federation for this summer’s European Swimming Championships headed to Paris, France in August.

14 women and 14 men have been named to the roster, including multiple Olympians and national record holders.

The names were revealed at the conclusion of the Spanish Open Trials which took place through last weekend. There in Mallorca, four new Spanish benchmarks were established by two swimmers, both on the men’s side of the house.

18-year-old Luca Hoek became the first man from the nation ever to delve under the 48-second threshold in the men’s 100m freestyle. The teen stopped the clock at a monster new lifetime best of 47.72 for a new Spanish record, with 28-year-old veteran Cesar Castro also getting under the barrier for the first time with his silver medal-worthy outing of 47.98.

Hoek also downed the 200m freestyle record in the competition, posting a career-swiftest time of 1:46.10 to inch closer to the 1:46 barrier.

The other records came at the hands of University of Florida Gator Nil Cadevall, with the 19-year-old registering history-making marks in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. In the former, he hit 27.30 and reached 1:00.30 in the latter to etch his name onto the European Championships roster.

2024 World Championships multi-medalist Hugo Gonzalez is another highlight on the men’s lineup, with the former Cal Bear seeking to get back to his 2021 European Championships form where he delivered a 200m IM gold, 100m back silver and 50m back bronze at that year’s edition in Budapest.

The women will see Ainhoa Campabadal lead the charge, joined by the likes of Maria Daza, Estella Tonrath and Alba Vazquez.

Campabadal’s Spanish Open results included a head-turning new lifetime best of 1:57.86 to knock over half a second off her former PB.
