Rachel Gibson Stays In-State with Commitment to East Carolina University

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Rachel Gibson from Albemarle, North Carolina has announced her commitment to swim at East Carolina University beginning this fall for the 2021-2022 school year.

“I am very excited to announce my commitment to study and swim at East Carolina University! I would like to thank God for this incredible opportunity, along with my coaches, family and friends for helping me get to this point! Go Pirates!

Gibson competes for Rowan Aquatic Club in Salisbury, NC. Gibson has notched multiple best times this year. At the end of January, she swam a best time of 2:26.53 in the 200 breaststroke. In March, she also swam best times in the 200 IM (2:13.87), 100 breaststroke (1:06.97), and 100 freestyle (55.93). This summer she swam best times of 1:16.25 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:53.55 in the 200 breaststroke.

Gibson just graduated this spring from North Stanly High School in New London, NC. This winter she earned All-Conference honors. Her best short course times are:

  • 100 breaststroke – 1:06.97
  • 200 breaststroke – 2:26.53
  • 200 IM – 2:13.87
  • 100 freestyle – 55.93
  • 100 butterfly – 1:00.84

East Carolina University is a Division I school located in Greenville, NC. In May 2020, ECU announced that they would cut both men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. By October 2020, SwimSwam reported that over half of the 2019-2020 roster had already announced their transfers, but by January 2021 the women’s team was reinstated. The men’s team has not yet been reinstated.

Neither team competed during the 2020-2021 season, but at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships, the women’s team finished fourth out of six teams. Gibson’s 200 breaststroke time would have placed her 16th at that conference meet. Her 100 breaststroke of 1:06.97 was just off the scoring time of 1:06.14.

Gibson will join ECU this fall along with Alayna Carlson, Ava Iannetta, Grace Weed, Kaila Hewitt, Meghan Armstrong, Mia Cote, and Reagan Youngblood in the class of 2025.
