Men’s 100 Breaststroke – By the Numbers

As SwimSwam reported yesterday, 16-year-old Shin Ohashi produced a personal best and new World Junior Record of 58.94 in the 100 breaststroke.

For some perspective, Ohashi’s time would have been quick enough for gold at the 2024 Olympic Games, beating Martinenghi’s winning 59.03 in Paris.

  • Read, in detail, about his swim here.

The race video of his record-setting swim is now available below.

A shame he’s not going to be in Singapore.

Decent, if he came to the states he’d be better. Could use a little tune up.

Can someone explain to me the reasoning behind the WJR age logic? I understand how it works, but why?

I know physical development varies drastically depending on person. However, if your birthday is on Dec 31, it seems you are at a great disadvantage.

its not 100% fair but if they went by age a similar thing would happen since the major junior meets all happen around the same time of year. it would just favor those that age up right after the summer instead.

That’s a good point. Having a spring birthday, I can empathize

Extremely high stroke rate like Peaty

Style very much reminiscent of Adam Peatty. Imagine when Ohashi fills out some. He is going to be a dominant force in breaststroke. Notice that there are a number of young teen swimmers starting to tear up the record books. I guess the next tranche of superstars are beginning to surface.

Like with Peaty, it looks to me like he may be getting a propulsion boost from the undulation from the thorax through the hips. I want to be clear that I think it’s totally legal and awesome to be able to pull it off. Would love an underwater video.

100%. The undulation is crazy, especially (or more visibly) on the first 50. As long as the kick is clearly legal and not a Sakci-like dolphin version, we’ve got a new breaststroke force on our hands.
