Up Next for Sochi, Russia – 2020 World Short Course Championships Bid

According to the state-owned R-Sport news agency, Russia is vying to host the 2020 World Short Course Championships in none other than Sochi, Russia, where the recent 2014 Winter Olympic Games just wrapped up.

After a recent meeting between Vladimir Salnikov and FINA, Salnikov says that FINA invited Russia to submit a bid for the more minor of the two versions of swimming’s World Championship meets. Especially now after the $51 billion Olympic investment, Sochi is becoming a huge center of sport in Russia. That’s due largely to it’s relatively temperate climate in the frigid Russian winter, with highs never averaging colder than 50 degrees. The average high in December, when the World Short Course Championships are usually held, is around 54 degrees.

Salnikov acknowledged that they probably weren’t the only bidders, and despite not having a pool suitable for the event, with all of the new concert venues and stadiums in town, a temporary facility would not be a problem.

Russia has become a popular host for major swimming events (though many are a piece of a larger multi-sport event), including the 2013 World University Games and the 2015 World Championships and World Masters Championships in Kazan.

Could the Sochi critics remind me of the events America is bidding for or has held in this century?

There was some vague talk of Denmark putting in a bid to get this to Copenhagen, not sure if anything ever came of it or not.

An entire pool full of the kind of ‘dangerous face water’ that probably took Bob Costas out? Sounds like a great idea.

Please, no. 😡
2013 track and field world championships
2014 winter olympic games
2015 swimming world championships
2018 soccer world cup
Enough!
I’m really tired of Russia and especially tired of seeing the face of the dictator at its head.

And what has France contributed in sport by hosting any event? Or the USA for that matter.

These things take organisation, facilities & money & a political will .

It seems these are missing factors in those that whine . Ihave seen the polls & I doubt Hollande will be there in 2017 so we will be blessed by not having to look at toad face sneaking around oh is bicycle poking 42year olds in the middle of the night. Pathetique.

Haters gonna hate. That whining out if nothing is way more annoying and has nothing in common with sport itself. Bit of Russophobic, too.

At least they would have enough time to fix some of those hotel doors smashed by trapped athletes, right?.. RIGHT?!
