MIT Water Polo Announces Class of 2024 Recruits

Cambridge, Mass. (September 1) – The MIT water polo team has announced its incoming recruiting class for the 2020-21 academic year as the Engineers and head coach Austin Ringheim welcome five incoming first-years to the team.

This year’s Class of 2024 features Henry Asa (Chappaqua, N.Y.)Alex Freedline (Miami, Fla.)Jack King (Los Altos, Calif.)Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) and Colin Weaver (Huntington Beach, Calif.).

“The Class of 2024 is well balanced,” said Ringheim. “We have a mix of student-athletes from all over the country that come from high level water polo programs. Each one will bring their own individual strengths that will continue to develop our program in the way we envision it. All of these young men bought in to the vision of being scholar-athletes and positive role models in our community on and off the pool deck. I am looking forward to watch them grow into themselves and the positive impact they will have in our community right away.”


HENRY ASA
Horace Greeley High School | Chappaqua, N.Y.

Henry joins the MIT water polo team after playing for Chelsea Piers Water Polo Club as a center defender. While on the team, he was named varsity captain and was an Outstanding Academic All-American. He was a member of the ODP Northeast Zone Team, a member of the New England All-Star Team and a bronze medalist at the 2017 World Maccabi Games. Out of the pool, Henry served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Greeley Tribune, was the Treasurer of the Student Government, was the Co-President of the Federal Reserve Challenge Club, was a Peer Leader and a was a web developer for Atolya. Henry graduated Summa Cum Laude from Horace Greeley and earned the Princeton University Book Award.


ALEX FREEDLINE
Ransom Everglades | Miami, Fla.

Alex joins the MIT water polo team after graduating Ransom Everglades High School as a four-year letterwinner in both water polo and swimming. Alex earned All-County honors and was named as the Most Promising Water Polo Player Award in 2018. He led his team to the 2017 State Championship. In 2018, his team reached the state semifinals and in 2019 his team was the runner up in the district. Outside of Ransom Everglades, Alex competed for Raider Water Polo where he competed in the Junior Olympics four times. Out of the pool, Alex served as the Vice President of The Youth Advisory Committee of the Children’s Trust in Miami and was also a member of the following organizations: Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Science National Honor Society and the Chinese Honor Society. Alex graduated as a three-time USA Water Polo Outstanding Academic All-American.


JACK KING
Menlo School | Los Altos, Calif.

Jack joins the MIT water polo team after graduating from the Menlo School as a three-time varsity letterwinner. Jack was named to the All-Peninsula Athletic League team in 2018 and 2019 and helped his team to second place once in the CCS Division III tournament and twice in the CCS Open Division tournament. He also played for the Stanford Water Polo Club and played center defender. Out of the pool, Jack earned highest honors all four years and earned both the 2019 Statistics Department Award and the 2020 Menlo School Writing Award.


EVAN KOWAL
South Pasadena High School | South Pasadena, Calif.

Evan joins the MIT water polo team after graduating from South Pasadena High School as Salutatorian as well as a four-time varsity letterwinner in water polo and three-time varsity letterwinner in swimming. Evan served as captain of both squads twice and played both attacker and center. Evan was named to the All-Rio Hondo League First Team in both 2018 and 2018, to the All-SoCal Varsity Team in 2019 and as team MVP in 2019. He guided his water polo team to the league championship with an undefeated record in both 2018 and 2019. He also played for the Rose Bowl Water Polo Club and the Foothill Water Polo Club. Out of the pool, Evan served as ASB Commissioner of Assemblies and was named as both a 2020 Taco Bell Live Mas Scholar and a 2020 Oneonta Foundation Swann Scholar.


COLIN WEAVER
Mater Dei High School | Huntington Beach, Calif.

Colin joins the MIT water polo team after graduating from Mater Dei High School as Valedictorian and as a two-time varsity water polo letterwinner. Colin was named to the Trinity League Second Team and was named as the Most Inspirational Player. Out of the pool, Colin was the co-founder and President of the Finance Club, was a four-time water polo Scholar-Athlete, a National AP Scholar and was named to the Principal’s List Honor Roll four straight years.
