Missouri State Set For Shamrock Invitational In Regular Season Finale

In its final meet of the regular season, the Missouri State men’s swimming and diving team will compete at the Shamrock Invitational on Jan. 27-28 at the campus of Notre Dame.

The Bears will go up against No. 22 Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Grand Canyon at the two-day meet. The meet features three sessions with the first beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan 27. Session two is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 and session three is slated for 3 p.m. Last season, the Bears competed against Notre Dame, Iowa and Grand Canyon, where the Bears recorded several top-10 performances.

The Missouri State Bears returned to the pool last week to compete against nationally ranked opponents Drury and Missouri. Against Drury, who is ranked third in NCAA Division II, the Bears brought home 24, top-five individual victories and one relay victory. Antonio Thomas and Artur Osvath were both double-crown winners while Nicholas Theunissen and Thomas Heye earned one victory apiece.

Thomas broke two Breech Pool records in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle and Osvath broke the Breech Pool record in the 200yd individual medley. Heye earned his victory in the 100yd backstroke while Theunissen took home the 100yd breaststroke.

Against the No. 15 Missouri Tigers, Thomas, Osvath and Minki Kang were leaders for the squad as Thomas and Kang recorded victories in their respective events and Osvath took home two, first-place finishes.

Four Bears – Michael Mollak, Phillip Willet, Thomas, and Osvath – hold top times in Mid-American Conference action. Mollak leads the 200yd free, Thomas holds the top spot in the 500, 1000, and 1650yd free, Osvath claims the 200yd breast and 200 fly, while Willett controls both the 200 and 400yd IM.

Nationally, one freshman and three sophomores are ranked in the top-50. Thomas, a freshman, is No. 18 in the 1000yd free and No. 23 in the 1650yd free. For the sophomores, Kang sits No. 48 in the 1000yd free, Willett holds No. 45 in the 400yd IM while Osvath ranks No. 16 in the 200yd breast.
