Several high-profile Japanese swimmers were in action over the weekend, taking to the pool at the 2026 Tokyo Senior Winter Swimming Meet.
Among them was 19-year-old Olympic finalist Mio Narita, with the teen racing in multiple events over the course of the two-day competition.
The women’s 100m free saw Narita claim silver, posting a time of 55.07. That finished ahead of Mairin Sasao who collected bronze in 55.64 but behind leader Tamura Mayu who claimed the top spot in 54.85.
Narita snagged another silver in the 100m back where she produced a mark of 59.16 as one of two sub-minute performers in the final.
Sasao was too quick to catch, hitting 58.44 for the gold, as Reina Shiba turned in a time of 1:00.27, good enough for the bronze.
Moving along her packed schedule, Narita upgraded to gold in both the 100m breaststroke and the 100m butterfly events.
In the former, Narita topped the podium in 1:07.69 and in the latter she logged 58.79 as the victor, with both outings representing new lifetime bests.
On the men’s side, Mochida Rintaro put on a show, reaping gold across the 50m back, 200m IM and 400m IM events.
Rintaro registered 24.05 in the backstroke sprint, keeping veteran Junya Koga at bay. Koga, who is still competing at 38 years of age, put up 24.33 as the only other swimmer to delve under the 25-second threshold.
Rintaro touched in times of 1:56.82 and 4:08.82 in the 200m and 400m IM events, respectively, with both performances representing his fastest ever.
24-year-old Shoma Sato was another key athlete in the men’s races, with the breaststroke ace topping the 50m breast podium in 27.32 tonight.

Nice to see Sato racing again
