It looks like MVC decided to do a combined championships this year, thereby making their affiliate members have 2 meets at the same time. Last year, the men had their own meet the weekend before the women’s MVC, which has historically been the same weekend as women’s MAC.

Could be time to start looking for a new affiliate conference for Miami, BSU, and UMass if that trend will continue in the future.

I totally agree with you! Really disappointing to see that the MVC and MAC couldn’t find a way to collaboratively “work together” for the greater good of Miami, Ball State and UMass! Even if the MVC did want to combine the Men and Women into one conference meet, both conferences had a more than viable option to ensure that the MAC and MVC meets didn’t conflict with each other. Simple as having one of the meets held the prior weekend. Heck, “flip a coin”. Instead, both conferences are negatively impacting Miami, Ball State and UMass student-athletes, coaches, trainers, staff, families and fans. It’s this type of selfish behavior by the conferences that hurts the sport as a whole.

That’s what I figured. I don’t know the inner-workings of the MVC, but I know the MAC schedules its championship meets 3 years in advance. I wonder what made the MVC move to combined meet, which will be very crowded. They have no cap on roster numbers at meets, so just assuming every team has 30 swimmers/divers, that is 510 athletes – way too many IMO to run an optimal championship meet. With 9 women’s teams and (now) 8 men’s teams, those are already large enough meets to stand on their own!

Hopefully they will return to a common sense format next year!

If the MVC wanted to move to a combined meet, they had at least two different weeks to choose from. And, they chose the week that they knew was a conflict and caused significant problems for Miami, Ball State and UMass. In doing so, the MVC knew this would put those schools in a bind and force them to compete with only half of their coaching and support staff. And, as far as the MAC goes, evening with scheduling the meet three years out, there is absolutely nothing keeping them from simply having the MAC’s one weekend earlier or later. I’m not sure why neither conference was willing to “do the right thing” and show good sportsmanship by moving the dates… Read more »
