Maddie Groves Brings Home Bond’s Sportswoman Of The Year Award

For the 2nd consecutive year, Australian butterflier Madeline Groves has taken home Bond University’s Blues Award for Sportswoman of the year. Groves is a sophomore at Bond, enrolled in a Bachelor of Social Sciences program. She is a member of Bond’s Swimming Club, under the direction of legendary coach Richard Scarce.

The Bond University Blues Awards Dinner is held annually to celebrate and acknowledge the sporting achievements of the school’s student athletes and clubs. Among the criteria for earning the recognition, Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year nominees must have achieved success at national or international level of competition, as well as have been selected to a national team or development squad.

21-year-old Groves scored a silver medal in Rio, finishing behind Spaniard Mireia Belmonte in the women’s 200m butterfly event. Her runner-up status was an improvement on the bronze medal-garnering result she registered at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Last year Groves also received the Georgina Hope Rinehart Swimming Excellence Scholarship to assist in her schooling.

Bond University Swimming Club was given the Blues Champion Club award, while Scarce was named Coach of the Year.

Sailing Champion Matthew Belcher was Groves’ male counterpart in winning the ‘SOY’ award.
