SCS Senior Dual LCM Meets at MVN

A new best for Kamal Muhammad and an all-time age group ranked swim for Kayla Han highlighted last weekend’s Senior Dual LCM Meets at Mission Viejo.

Muhammad, a reclassified high school junior committed to attend the University of Virginia, swam a 54.62 in the 100 meter fly. That improved upon his previous best time of 54.83 done at the US Open site in Huntsville in November. Coming into the pandemic season, his best time was 55.46 from the summer of 2018.

Muhammad, son of 25-time Stanford All-American Sabir Muhammad, normally trains with Spartans Aquatic Club in Atlanta. He says he’ll be in California training with Mission Viejo until this summer’s Olympic Trials, though, because of the lack of available long course space in Atlanta. Muhammad does not yet have an Olympic Trials cut.

In other races on the weekend, he also added a 1:54.52 best time in the 200 free, and was disqualified in the 200 IM.

Meanwhile, 12-year old Kayla Han of La Mirada Armada continued her hot streak with a 9:06.45 lifetime best in the 800 free as a split en route to a 1500 swim. That 800 time ranks her now 11th all-time in the 11-12 age group in that event: one spot ahead of another young phenom Claire Weinstein, who is the youngest qualifier for the 2021 US Olympic Trials at 13.

That time is under the USA Swimming Futures cut based on the most recent 2019 standards.

Han also swam a best time of 28.56 in the 50 free, 2:07.26 in the 200 free, and 18:23.82 in the 1500 free (a best time in spite of going after the 800 meter split). That time in the 200 free ranks her 21st all-time in the event.

I got all ready to write a comment about how there’s a huge disconnect between going 9:06 and 18:23, then I went and looked at splits and clearly she swam for an 800 time and then warmed down for 700 meters, so….never mind, carry on.
