Kansas Women Down 2 Points After Day 1 of Missouri State/Denver Tri

DAY 1 RECAP

Kansas opened their meet season by welcoming the women of Missouri State and Denver Friday night for the first of two days of competition in Lawrence.  Denver and Missouri State also brought their men’s teams to face each other.

After 1 day of competition, the Kansas women lead Missouri State 150-32 and trail Denver 93-91. Denver women lead Missouri State 141-41.

On the men’s side, Denver leads the Missouri State Bears 131-49.

Women

The meet opened with an exciting 200 medley relay where Denver and KU were tied at 1:21.98 as the 4th swimmers took to the water.  Senior Zoe Huddleston of Denver went 23.58 to out-touch freshman Haley Bishop (23.69), giving Denver the win in 1:45.56.

Freshman Jayhawk Libby Walker took control of the 1000 free from the start, winning by almost 2 seconds (10:14.09).  Libby grabbed an Olympic Trials cut this summer, so it stands to reason that she will have a good season ahead.

Denver ladies Johanna Roas (1:50.48), Maddie Myers (1:52.44) and Annelyse Tullier (1:53.63) combined to take 14 points by taking 1st, 3rd and 4th in the 200 freestyle event.

Hannah Angell of the Jayhawks went 56.85 and outouched Denver’s Morgan McCormick (56.93) in the 100 back.

Senior Jayhawk Chelsie Miller’s 2:01.96 was a solid first meet time and was enough to hold off senior MSU Bear Dora Kiss (2:04.06) in the 200 fly.  Libby Walker finished a strong 3rd in 2:04.68.

The 200 IM saw Chelsie Miller’s second win of the night (2:05.44)

While the MSU women have not been able to score many points, it is worth noting that a number of swimmers made best times tonight including Isabella Simcox (1:59.46 200 free), Emily Chesser (1:00.69, 100 back), Olivia Gean (1:09.24, 100 breast) and Anna Bump (24.87, 50 free)

MEN

The Denver men dominated Friday evening, winning 9 of 10 events.  They lead MSU 131-49 going into Saturday.

MSU’s Uvis Kalnins and Artur Osvath took 1st and 2nd in the 200IM by going 1:51.37 and 1:52.51 respectively, leaving the rest of the field far behind.

With solid performances throughout the evening from Denver, the one that stands out most was the 800 free relay of Dylan Bunch, Ray Bornman, Luke Williams and Kyle Robrock who went 6:43.18, winning by nearly 11 seconds and breaking a 31 year old pool record previously set by Nebraska.

The meet continues on Saturday 10/24 at noon
