World Junior Champion John Shortt took on a new event on day 1 of the Irish Winter Swimming Championships, in the process crushing not only his own personal best, but also the Irish Record in the event.

Best known as a 200 backstroker, an event in which he’s the defending World Junior Champion, Shortt won the 200 IM on Friday in 1:55.80. That takes more than 48 seconds off his previous personal best in the race from 2019 (when he was just 12), but more substantially breaks the Irish Record.

The former record of 1:56.74 was set in 2019 by Brendan Hyland, who is also not primarily a butterflier.

Shortt, 18, also smashed the country’s Junior Record which was 1:58.36 done in 2018 by Jack McMillan, once again a swimmer not best known for his IM’ing capabilities.

Splits Comparison:

Brendan Hyland John Shortt
Old Irish Record
New Irish Record
50 fly 25.01 25.50
50 back 30.23 27.78
50 breast 33.48 35.54
50 free 28.02 26.98
Total Time 1:56.74 1:55.80

Short is also scheduled to swim the 100 back, 200 back, 50 free, and 200 free later in the meet.

Other Day 1 Highlights:

  • Lottie Cullen from Northern Ireland won the women’s 50 backstroke in 26.77. That shaves .05 seconds off her previous personal best.
  • Ellen Walshe, who last week won the European Championship in the 200 IM and silver in the 200 fly, won the 100 free on Friday in Dublin in 53.18. That knocks .77 seconds off her previous personal best and leaves her just .15 seconds shy of Danielle Hill‘s Irish Record of 53.03 from 2023. Walshe is coming off her taper and using this meet to capture times in secondary events: she’s entered in the 200 free, 100 fly, and 400 free later in the meet.
  • 21-year-old Jack Cassin won the 200 fly in 1:54.44.
  • Eoin Corby, the Irish Record holder in the 200 breaststroke in short course meters from the European Championships last week, swam 58.60 in the 100 on Friday to kick off his meet. In Poland, he swam 58.34 to place 29th in prelims, which was his first best time in this event since 2019.
  • 17-year-old Ava Jones won the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:08.26 with an aggressive 32.12 opening split that allowed her to hold off the runner-up Niamh Connery (1:08.91).
