Japan Surges In The WUGS Medal Table But The United States Is Out Of Reach

2025 World University Games

With just two days remaining at the 2025 World University Games, the chase is on for nations to finish as far up on the swimming medal table as they can.

The United States is currently unreachable, having amassed a total of 29 medals, including 16 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze. That already obliterated the nation’s total from the 2021 edition in Chengdu, where the stars n’ stripes placed 6th with just 7 medals in total.

On day five, it was Japan that surged to 2nd place, although it holds a slim lead over South Africa, which also holds 2 gold medals.

For Japan, Niko Aoki collected bronze in the women’s 1500m free while Yumeno Kusuda and Yuyumi Obatake made it a 1-2 punch with the top two finishes in the women’s 200m breaststroke.

Japan also landed on the podium with silver behind the United States in the mixed 4x100m free relay to cap off a successful night of racing.

Reo Okura has a chance to add another piece of hardware to the Japanese bounty, sitting as the 2nd-seeded swimmer in the men’s 50m breaststroke whose final is this evening. Rio Sato also made it into the women’s 200m IM final, although she currently ranks 8th, well behind the semi leaders.
